The metric cup is 250ml, it's still used plentifully anywhere that's not the US. Hell, I've a book of recipes from my grandma that is in metric, and guess what, cups and spoons show up because they're daily things, but ml and kg also show up because baking is fucking dreadful and needs to be consistent.

You need to figure out the weight to convert to grams meaning you often have to measure using cups then weigh that amount of food. Sometimes people have already figured out a decent conversion, but things like flour can vary from brand to brand even if they are the same type of flour. If accuracy is important at all, I look for recipes that include or primarily use weight measurements. It's been a good filter for shitty recipes, so I've started favoring all recipes that at least include weight equivalents.
