Jack is technically not bourbon because of the charcoal filtration. Not much real difference between jack and other cheap bourbons in my own opinion. So yeah, it really does add up to basically marketing in this context, seeing as it's an american whiskey that's made mostly with corn and probably also aged in charred oak barrels, they just filter it with charcoal and that technically disqualifies it. Now the difference between bourbon/jack and most scotch? That's a more substantive one. But at the end of the day whiskey is mostly about these autistic details that hardly matter.

I came to work today and the boss got me this. Pretty excited desu. It's not super expensive or rare or anything, and it's NAS, but it is non-chillfiltered, no color added, and it's 50% so not quite cask strength, but not too watered down.

also 100% of the barley is from islay so that's neat.

There's a white tin and a black tin, does anyone know what the difference is?

My notes say Tenjaku, Starward Two Fold, The Six Isles and Taketsuru Pure Malt.
I tried some old Hibiki and Yoichi and they didn't impress. Mars and Nika from the barrel haven't impressed. Other Johnnies underwhelm.
I tired a very cheap dram at a whisky bar; it was a 60's bottling of Haig. Fantastic stuff, but a collectors item now.
