This is the biggest reason for me. Buffets, whether they be independent or big chains start out usually pretty OK quality-wise. As time goes on, they tend to cut corners (Removing nicer items, cheeping out on ingredients, changing to cheaper vendors) and raise the price. At the same time, you have the local population stating to learn about said buffet and starting to ruin it with shitty behavior.

For example: Ryans a good 15+ years ago was a pretty decent chain and had a lot of decent stuff. Over time, they slowly started to lose money and started to cheapen out. The local one was closed, and I was dragged to one back around 2014 that was still operational. No joke, it was near inedible and I rarely had that issue with buffets. Golden Corral is similar, but in this case it was more because entire families would act like shitheads and it became more tedious (and more expensive) to eat there then to just go to a normal sit down restaurant. Hell, remember Ponderosa back in the 90s? Same thing happened to them that Ryans had happen later.

Its a circle, and one that will only get worse with the virus. I suspect we will see a lot of buffet style places going under in the next year or so.

The people were so loud it was not unusual for some to start shouting. My drink was watery and they came back with another drink that was even more watery like they didn't even think to change it. The corn was clearly the kind you get for like 78 cents at a bargain market and everything else was the cheapest you could go too. Despite this, they were extremely high-priced and packed to disorderliness that left people taking my table while I went to get food, while my stuff was there marking my spot.
It makes me sad to realize that all the good buffets before them closed down because of the people that went there and not because of anything else. Where is there a place free from them?

If you can, try going to a university dining hall at off hours. Variety, cleanliness and freshness are way better than any standalone buffet, and you can come out a few bucks ahead even when paying the non-student price. Plus you can gorge all you want and not have Chinese owners glare at you - I'd challenge myself to stay an entire Saturday and eat as much as possible - alfredo pasta, garlic bread, custom burritos, salads, pizza, dumplings, burgers, chicken sandwiches, kebab, mac, paninis, pork katsu, egg rolls, pie, and of course unlimited milk. It was a game changer when I discovered there's a bathroom you can use without leaving the buffet.
