Our office is quite small and open plan but has a sort of island in the centre with the kitchen and coffee etc. No ovens but there was a microwave so some fish in there for 8-10 minutes and I had a nice healthy lunch.

I could sometimes even see dirty looks from others as they only had sandwiches like in the OP

I'm actually normally salaried. So, when my work is done, I should be able to get the fuck out. But no, "there is always more work," and so instead of taking an hour break like you're supposed to have, now people show up at 8 or earlier, work at their desks over lunch, and then stay until 6 or later. Unless you live in Eastern Europe or something, you don't get it. Corporations in the UK or the rest of Europe give you something like a month of holiday. Maybe a break over Christmas while things shut down, too.

In the US, a new college graduate can expect five days of combined time off and sick pay. You can't take unpaid time off - you'll lose your job. You might not have insurance at all. If you change jobs? They will start you back at the minimum amount of leave. If you get sick? They might fire you. Jobs in my state are "at will," meaning I can be fired for any reason at any time with no legal recourse, and not be eligible for unemployment insurance.

If I could leave the US for Europe, I'd do it immediately.
