I'm in SoCal so I'm surrounded by Mexican food. Not all of it is great, of course. Some of it is very much not great. But, when you do find the great stuff, it's unreal. Here's a recent to-go order we got from our favorite local place. I got slow-cooked pork ribs in salsa verde with nopales (cactus). Shit's amazing.

Damn that looks good. I really want to visit cali and San Antonio for Mexican food. I live in Chicago so I've got no shortage of godtier Latin foods but I just keep hearing about SoCal and SanAN mex that it is killing me. I went to Texas once and ate some places in Dallas and Austin that were really good but I can't remember now, I should start a big list in case i ever find myself in a different city.

San Martin Café in the South Bay, between Morgan Hill and Gilroy on Monterey Road was always pretty good, depending on who is cooking. But they're only open till like 2pm. They are like Mexican cowboys that opened a diner and serve breakfast and lunch. They are very affordable too. Top tier. Here's their Chile Verde breakfast.

This. Hard. The craft beer scene in Baja is also the best in the country. Wine as well but I don't really drink wine.

Maybe I would had Hermosillo Sorona for that steak + flour tortilla combo. Try Cabreria (tenderloin on the bone) and some tripas de leche asadas. Hermosillo as a tourist destination sucks tough.

I think it's more that once you've really had Mexican food in San Diego it kinda makes everywhere else seem really really bad. It's hard to get good Mexican in socal too outside of SD. OP's salsa verde looks delicious though and I've had insane green chili (which is oddly yellow) in Denver of all places. So it exists it's just in San Diego a run down hole in the wall taco shop with graffiti on the tables will absolutely destroy a nice restaurant in every other border state.

Fellow socal and yellow anon here. One of the great things about being in this shithole is the cheap but good mexican food. I knew a guy whose mom owned a restaurant so I hung out there sometimes waiting for him and would help in the back. It's actually pretty clean as far as I can tell without actually having worked there, and I've seen much worse working at mcdonald's. Places like that are a treasure.

Salsa verde is the fucking bomb, too. The place I described has a lighter shade of it so yours looks a bit dark but the texture looks good. Good shit my man.

I don't know much about your neck of the woods but my usual taco joints from North to South in the metro area are Rigoberto's in Miramar, Dos Brasas down by the airport and Albeto's in IB.

On a related note, if you ever get up to Long Beach you NEED to go to Berth 55. It's not quite secret anymore but it's some of the best seafood in SoCal at prices that will make you think it's the 90s again. Charo Chicken is also god-tier.
