I could really go for a gas station hot dog right now. I don't even like hot dogs that much, but I'll eat one every four or five years. It has to have the dispenser chili, dispenser nacho cheese product, and mustard on it too. Plus a bag of cool ranch Doritos and an extra large Mountain Dew with those little pellets of ice that are fun to crunch on.

Only when I have a huge craving for grease and fat. Regular fast food is overrated for that. I just got a cheap sandwich of nothing but cheese and salami, pepperoni, and ham at a gas station and it hit the spot. No need for fries and tendies/nugs.

I worked at a gas station for 3 months over the summer and was shocked at the food production. I figured all our sandwiches were made and shipped to the store premade and frozen and we just thawed them out, but it turns out that the sandwiches are actually made in the back in regular intervals every couple of hours. The roller grill stuff like hot dogs and tornados are typically swapped out every 4-6 hours if they aren't taken, which I think is pretty fair. I was honestly pretty shocked that the quality of the food was as high as it was because gas station has a sort of reputation to it, but at least at my store, it's literally at the quality of any mass fast food chain bar the ones with gimmicks like Wendy's where they get all their beef fresh. I don't think I'm any more likely to go out of my way to eat gas station food, but I feel like I'm more accepting of it and less judgmental now, so maybe I'll end up eating a few more polish sausages or buffalo chicken rollerbites here and there, who knows.

That all seems fairly believable. I've never gotten sick from gas station food, and it's usually pretty tasty and hits the spot. My only problem is that to keep it food safe they really have to crank the temp on those rollers/heat trays, which means you occasionally receive a dessicated piece of leather that used to be a chicken patty or hot dog. The ones with cheese injected into then hold up better though.

I worked at a Kwik Trip years ago when they were first starting to put hot food in place. They ended up being a really good company to work for. They took solid care of us as employees and the clockwork in which things happened was nice and predictable. Good company. Their cheese filled garlic breadsticks are out of this world good. They're soft and super gooey and garlic-buttery and come with marinara sauce. These are my snack of choice if I'm on the road and need a pick me up.

I know what you're talking about, OP but I've got to say there is this place called Whoah Nellie Deli
>pic related
and it's a Mobil gas station out in the middle of nowhere somewhere between Yosemite and the town of Lee Vining which I guess USED to be out in the middle of nowhere but depending on road closures still is for half the year.. It's pretty much on the border of Nevada and California. You know, what used to be wild-west country. But god-dammit they serve up some of the best gourmet road-side food I've ever had at a gas station.
They had like fish tacos, ginger cole slaw, mango margaritas (weird for a gas station) and I think I had a ginger "beer" (non alcoholic but strong) with a pulled pork sandwich that was cooked with local berries (gooseberry?). Shit was cash.

There is a gas station near to where I live called The Outpost that has some really great breakfast / lunch / dinner menus. Mostly it's just a gas station but they do everything local for their so-called "deli". Bitchen breakfasts and after that, their lunches and dinner menus are mostly sandwich fare, either basic or with a daily flare. I know the bread is home-made and brought in daily in the morning. I know this because I've seen it while getting my 5:59 a.m. bottle of vodka and it smells DEVINE while it's still warm. But it's still just mostly a gas station that makes most of its money off tobacco sales.

THOSE, I gladly eat at.

Having said that, I still love a basic bean, cheese and meat frozen burrito with "green sauce" in a plastic bag and a soda in a plastic bottle of some kind that I can just stuff into my bag while I walk on. By the time I get to a place to sit down and eat it, half is warmed from the sun on my bag and half is ice crystals.

>>14555118
I've wondered about that while eating an egg salad sandwich while hung-over about halfway through it. Tasted great. I was worried I'd start barfing in the middle of the board meeting I was going to but no.

Right on both counts.
That graphic "artist" department must've been voted in by a "bored" of directors and I always got gas from gas station food. I still will in a pinch, but will feel bad and guilty about it through the entire process.
It's just pre-digested shit, I tell myself.
But it tastes good while driving down the road in the darkened hours of wee-morning.

The temp on both sides, as well. Yeah, the cooking, for sure, but also before being prepped it has to have the proper refrigeration if you're dealing with meats. Veggies, bread and cheese you can get a bit of a leeway and fudge so long as it's cooked in the end. Or, pickled, I guess. I hear ya.

I remember listening to that radio show "Love-Line" years ago with Dr. Drew and he was saying that he once got a caller back in the day who - when the guy would press on his finger-nails the entire surface under the nail would turn black.

Drew said that he'd read about that before but had never actually seen it in person or really thought that it was even possible in this day and age. Turned out, the dude had scurvy. His diet consisted of 7-11 burritos and beer for nearly and entire year straight. His advice was simply, "Next time you go to 7-11 pick up a package of Skittles, especially the sour kind."
Then he spent the rest of the show pondering that one would think that in those burritos there would at least be some sort of ascorbic acid as a preservative.

Here in Bongland a lot of gas stations only really have pasties and pies and things, which thanks to the flaky pastry makes a fucking mess if you are planning to eat in in your car.

Matters less if you're a bunch of top builder lads on your way to the site in a crusty old van. But if one is nearby it makes good hangover food. One near me used to do a "cheeburger pastie" which was the cheapest burger patty thing, with a cheese and pickle mixed relish on top, and the whole thing encased in pastry. That and an Irn Bru sorted you right out after a proper skinful the night before.

I think it's the bad typography that gets me. I like the color scheme and even the fonts and all, but the lower-case in everything... Does that inflect that it is insignificant? As in, "just in passing through" kind of vibe?
Asking for a friend.
I remember there was an acclaimed graphic designer who did this style in the 90s for a band called New Order who had this vibe via his artwork and then they got their first #1 hit in America. It was called "Regret" but I don't think they had any say in how their image came out.
I think that if they did, they probably would've fucked it all up but I think that guy had his finger on the pulse for gas stations and what people were consuming. I remember hearing that song for the first time in a gas station, on a road trip, in the middle of the night and everybody in my RV was asleep except me (the driver) and the music and the smell of petrol and the allure of gas station food (which wasn't bad - or great) was all very both sweet and noxious in a good kind of way. I get that same feel when I smell diesel exhaust, like from school buses idling.

NAILED IT!

Yeah. You write what you know.
There are actually better places for getting over that mountain range, for instance, Kennedy Meadows, but we are talking gas station food and I actually have been there numbers of times. Hell, sometimes they even have live entertainment. It's usually collage kids with acoustic-style instruments from what I gather. The one I saw was a gal from UC Santa Cruz doing some research on the grasses that grow on the side of the highway (like you said 395) versus more inland, genetically) - she played cello / standup bass and a dude on guitar who was from Mammoth Lakes doing research on volcanic stuff but mostly he was there to get high and ski. They were actually pretty good; I was surprised.

If you can hold from the crappy gas-station-food, I'd say it's worth the wait for a nice respite. Depending on the time of day. I wouldn't want to hang out there in the middle of the night unless it was in the middle of summer. Otherwise it could be utter hell.

Stripes has pretty good breakfast tacos. The line is usually pretty long tho so I rarely get em nowadays but two chorizo & egg w/ potato goes hard as well with their salsa bar.

Otherwise they got some burritos that are just pure filth food but if I'm lazy as fuck grabbing two of those for a dollar with a big drink and a bag of chips is nice when I want to just get home from work and be a lazy shit.

That's my expectation.

I doubt they'll try to keep the things that Speedway does well; I expect they'll clear the board and do it the 7-11 way (for better corporate harmonization or some shit).
This will be an improvement for the rathole Speedway locations, and a significant downgrade for the nicer ones.

I don't eat gas station food because I had the unfortunate experience of working at one for six years out of high school. Think of the worst case scenario behind the food, and it's actually much worse. On my first day, I bought one of those hamburgers because I was starving and found a fucking bone fragment in the meat. I'm actually saving up for my first major purchase to be a Tesla so I never have to step foot inside of a gas station ever again.

I grew up in an I-95 truck stop town, and we had Flying J's, Pilot, and a couple other places. I can't remember the restaurants, but one had a Wendy's inside, another had a Golden Corral ripoff, and one had basically a mall food court.

You're fucking wrong kid. Wawa isn't great "food", but it's better than all the other big gas stations on the east coast. Sheetz has a wide menu, but anything that isn't fried sucks. Royal Farms chicken is actually pretty good, but it's no better than Hardee's (Can you get fried chicken there at like 3am though? I never stopped there at night), and 7-11 is pretty gross most times if you want to lump it in since it's not MTO like the others. I do have a soft spot for cheeseburger big bites though.

Don't think they're ovening the chicken; fryer schedules are posted to be sensible daytime hours, so they may have made some room for an automatic fryer.
If it was oven, they'd surely offer it overnight with a brief delay while they "make" it "fresh", just like if you don't see the sandwich you want in the day.
