Flavors will grow on you, but that's a problem for the future. You want to like something now.
Describing what makes a whisky good goes nowhere. You'll end up describing good whiskys and find that if your list has more than one entry your descriptions are contradictory. Better to describe bad whiskys and claim a good whisky is not that. I've disliked whiskys for being: boozy, sharp, bitter, lacking intensity, lacking complexity.
You're meant to enjoy the scent and taste. Some puritans also like to enjoy the colour, which for the most part is artificial. Some people care about viscosity.
The answer is almost always try something more expensive. What have you tried?
