Maybe the show he did about it will increase tourism to the area (when they open their borders) and that will help the economy. Tasmania is a cheap place to live with low housing prices relative to other states, but the job market is complete shit. There is massive skill and brain drain as well, with most kids with decent prospects leaving for the mainland and never returning. Some people try to stay, but Tasmania is so lacking in so many industries that there are no work prospects so they are forced to leave as well. I know because it happened to me.

I grew up in Tasmania. I spent a year looking for a job in my field there because I wanted to stay, but there was nothing and no one would employ me doing anything else because they knew I'd leave the moment I could find something better. I went to Melbourne and found something immediately.

It's great for old people, though. Old people love buying up houses and retiring there. Of course, this skewed age profile overwhelms the pitiful health care system. Sort of a problem with a state with an old age profile and high unemployment among the working age. Not enough dollars coming in to fund the health system, while there's a greater demand from all the seniors there. They also can't keep skilled medical professionals or attract them.
