I recently stopped being a NEET and got hired as a line cook bros. I thought working was supposed to suck dick but this is literally the best fucking job ever.

>everyone on the line is a bro
>everyone puts in effort to get shit done
>free meal and pop every shift
>decent pay
Honestly I don’t give a fuck if you call me a wagie. At least I work and enjoy it, faggot. Also, /ck/ related job thread.

15.50 an hour with a raise per station learned. I work for a chain but my location is western Washington. I haven’t gotten my first paycheck yet but all my days so far have been a little overtime. I don’t care, though. I come home tired as shit but I also feel very productive and proud of myself. It’s also been helping me with my problem of boredom eating, because I don’t eat much before and during my shift. Is this what it feels like to be an adult?

You guys been getting rain? We finally started getting fucking rain up here in BC and the smoke's gone away.
Also, yes, you're experiencing the "first satisfying job high". It feels great, but it doesn't last forever. I worked construction for a couple years, giddy on the whole being tired at the end of the day thing before eventually I was also tired at the beginning of the day as well. Tired for the whole day. Tired all the time. So fucking tired.

Well, lucky for me, the company had good insurance and long-term disability coverage. I'm a crippleNEET now, but I have more money that I can spend.

Yeah man, hope you guys are doing alright up there. The fires down here were pushing dangerously close to the western half of the state. We lost power for a good ~18 hours and then had thick smoke for what felt like weeks. But it’s been raining for the past few days now and that’s what I like about the PNW. I hope you’re doing well though, anon. It sucks to be in pain.

All I can say is to keep applying. If you want it you gotta show you want it and reach for it. Call around a few days after you’ve applied and ask if they got your application, send in your resume as well.

My resume was nothing but a warehouse job and bullshit “lawn service” from when I was in middle and high school, so I had a tough time finding a restaurant that would hire me. But I did, and it was definitely worth it.

>>14788415
This isn’t my end goal career wise. I’m not trying to stay in the industry, I just want to have a job I like and can gain culinary experience with while I go to school. I planned on starting in the fall but this corona bullshit is making it exceptionally hard to deal with. So it looks like spring now. I’m gonna major in anthropology and minor in English linguistics because I wanna get in the JET Program.

I’m not shitting on anyone in the industry when I say this, but if you’re working at a casual sort of place. Like a chain restaurant or small local place, most of the shit there doesn’t require any culinary background and can be taught to anyone who has bare minimum cognitive ability to learn stuff in the kitchen. I’m not saying it’s not hard, but anyone can kinda at least pick it up. The hard part is the pace.

To answer your question, though, their last line cook got fired because he didn’t do his job well. I wasn’t expecting to get this job either but I hoped myself up for the interview. I came in confident and answered everything honestly and the manager really liked me so I got it. I wish I could give you better answers, but everywhere is different. Personally, I’d say that once you get the interview, dress nice and just be coolly professional if that makes any sense at all.

If you know how to operate your own kitchen you technically have experience and that is 110% the truth. Also, don’t worry about what the hiring managers are gonna think about you (until you get to the interview process). If they don’t like the resume or don’t find you qualified they simply won’t respond. If thousands of dumb little zoomers in high school have the courage and confidence to apply to every game stop in town just because they can play fortnite, then you my man can definitely apply to a restaurant.

Also if you have no cooking experience on your resume and they call you in anyway, you won’t even have to worry about that. A professional kitchen is still a kitchen, it’s just got more structure to it.

Great job getting this far. Don’t get discouraged by the prospect of burnout or the job losing it’s luster; that happens to everything you have to do over and over for prolonged times. Anticipate it a little and plan around it - rotate stations, find another job that offers you better pay/benefits and climb positions over a few years using your training and experience, make some friends or whatever makes you feel like the job is a valuable part of your life beyond a way to spend your time. There’s a lot of good to be found in a decent job, and I’m sure you can find it.

As a pretty new worker myself, a direct tip: keep a careful eye on how much your coworkers get done on the job. If you wanna settle in, try to match pace and if you want to stand out, see where you can contribute something the kitchen needs. Once you make a good impression it’ll stick, and high praise from previous employers or coworkers gives a pretty good impression down the line. Have fun at work, bro

Aw damn, good morning! Good to see this stayed bumped through the night. Here's probably more information than you wanted, but some of it might be useful.
>Majored in English and History, took a Japanese class 7 semesters out of 8
>Only reason I was able to do all that was because I had a fuckton of AP credits that counted – One major should be enough, but if you can try for honors in it
>Studied abroad in Japan 1 semester (junior year), didn't help with my language skills too much but helped a LOT with my language confidence, my ability to actually trust myself to talk in Japanese
>Applied to the job before I graduated (which you can do as long as you graduate before you're hired) so they didn't know I was actually going to get honors or anything when I was accepted

Statement of Purpose:
>Focus not on what Japan can do for you, but on what you can do for Japan: Way too many people say that the JET Program would be good for them, but don't say why they would be an asset to it in return
>Don't say that you want to live/work in Japan once your time in the Program is up, even if you do; They're looking for "people who will go to Japan, love it, come back, and tell all their American friends back home how awesome Japan is" more than they're looking for "people who will go to Japan, love it, and stay there."

Interview:
>Japanese language ability is only bonus points. Don't count on this to carry you through the process if you have a weakness in other areas.
>Interviewers are 2-3 Western former JETs, 1 Japanese person (usually, at least)
>Questions are mostly "What's your experience teaching kids, what grades would you be most comfortable teaching, what would you do if you got assigned a place outside your comfort zone," etc.
>You can find a list at https://drive.google.com/file/d/1k-LExTOXnxa-YkOte6T1WX-kQ2OX4fFA/view?usp=sharing

>>14795454
>There will always be ONE total broadside question in the interview about your opinion on racism or gay rights or some other hot-button political issue, or a historical thing like the atomic bombings. This thing requires a bit more explanation.
A lot of people out there will tell you that this question isn't graded based on the content of your response, only the quality; It's basically a way of seeing how you respond towards something totally unexpected, with the goal of seeing you address it in a calm and tactful manner.
This is true, but it's also possible to give a "wrong answer" to this as well. While Japan itself is a generally more conservative country than the US, the types of people who go on the JET Program (and, consequently, the types of people who end up staffing the interview panels after they come back) are usually very far to the left. For example, one of mine was a literal tranny. You want to give a response that will satisfy the one native Japanese member of your panel (who will be a consulate staff member) as well as the three American former JETs who will have left-leaning sympathies. Make sure you can give a centrist or center-left response and make it sound genuine without spilling autism: That's the way to succeed on this question.

>After the English questions the Japanese person will talk to you a bit in Japanese if you've indicated that you know it. It should be about something easy, like why you like Japan or your favorite Japanese food.
>Try and have 1-2 questions for them when they ask you, I asked them if they'd been involved in after-school clubs when they were over there

And last but not least: DON'T make your Statement of Purpose or your interview about how anime/manga/J-Pop/etc. got you interested in Japan first, even if it did. They get a ton of those letters and having a different reason can help you stand out.
(2/3)

>> No.14795603

>>14795566
For me, yeah, it was anime, but instead I talked (probably par for the course for /ck/) about how I got really into Japanese cooking and started learning the language so I could read JP cookbooks. (Granted it was the Shokugeki no Souma cookbook, but they didn't need to know that.) It's probably OK to mention it, but definitely don't give it more than a sentence, and if you do mention it make sure to quickly segue into how it got you interested in Japanese culture more broadly. I guess if you got interested in Japan through TV drama or live-action movies or literature, that might fly better to focus on than anime since those are pretty normalfag things to watch in Japan.

No problem, anon! Also, checked.
The interview questions are mostly going to relate to stuff in your Statement of Purpose, so expect them to have read it and get ready to give your own responses consistent with it. This also kind of extends to the broadside question as well, they want to choose something that'll dig at you a bit. Like for me I mentioned in my resumé that I was a leader of a firearms club on campus and so they asked me something like "How would you respond if a Japanese guy walked up to you and said that America is a horrible place because people are always shooting each other in the streets and shooting up schools?"
And so I basically said yeah, those are problems, but even Japan itself hasn't banned guns and that the US might benefit from taking a page out of Japan's book on things (while going on to recap a bit of my knowledge about gun control over there for specifics).
