I'm fat. I never gain or lose weight, though. I remain fat because I would have to make myself hungry and tired all the time to lose weight (via exercise and a calorie deficit). I've been counting calories since February and have lost over 60 pounds by doing so.
When it came down to calorie budget, the poorly foods phased themselves out of my diet. I found that easier to accept then actively trying to avoid eating those foods, not because they are bad, but because they would put me over budget.

Yeah, this is the secret I think. By default, almost everyone starts with a working hunger signal which will keep them at a healthy weight. It's only engineered-to-hell fast and processed food, soda, etc. which throws that off balance.
If you just eat normal food and didn't already fuck your system up it's hard to get fat. I even make "unhealthy" food like fried chicken and alfredo often enough but I end up naturally eating less per serving so it works out. Carbs are the only thing which you can really over-eat a lot

I found that without changes to diet, 15m 3 times a week of sustained running (right on the edge of power walking desu) at a conversational intensity was enough to tip the balance and consistently lose weight. I was doing this before corona and I hadn't stopped losing weight even at the point where I had visible abs (which is slightly worrying because I do want to be fit).
