Detroiter who makes pizzas for a living here. I do genuinely like it, but it's one of those things where it gets made poorly about the same amount as it is done properly. One of the better Detroit style pizzas I've had was in Texas. It definitely is fun to tell people that it's essentially a pizza where you eat it like you would brownies.

Downtown Detroit and a few other "hip" neighborhoods (Midtown, Corktown, New Center) are gentrified as hell and well-policed. A lot of horror stories people tell are just exaggerated instances of a homeless person bugging them for money (just tell them you don't have cash and they'll just leave you alone).

Detroit is many things, but "boring" probably isn't one. We are aggressively friendly sometimes, which is how sometimes mistake randoms starting conversation as a mugging. Even our panhandlers are mostly friendly, it's just mostly jarring to people from outside the midwest.

Also get used to "Detroit" being a fucking huge area. The city itself is geographically large and the metro area spans two states and part of canada.

But yeah Buddy's is decent but has gone corporate and gotten lazy. Cloverleaf is good but kinda salty. Pie-Sci is great if you wanna try crazy and sorta hipsterish pizza

I think the cheese is "brick" cheese also.

I like the crispy edged cheese and different spongy dough, foccacia style of a Detroit pizza. I like sausage pizza in Chicago too. However the world over, I still love the char edges on a coal fired or brick oven cooked pizza, something magical in a chewier denser dough more than a soft dough. The topping moods vary. Pic is my probably a top favorite "Bar Restaurant" in New Haven. My sibling finished up at Yale, so done with that area for frequent visits, but it rocked to have a gorgonzola dressed salad and some kind of half and half pizza, like clam-bacon-potato, or something else on the other side. Big sheet tray of hand pulled dough, cooked over fire. Delicious char on the edges.
