Agreed. Would’ve also been cool to see Julia Child’s years in the OSS when she’d gut Nazis with a fillet knife.

The funny part was Julia dissed this Julie bitch for what she was doing, and the diss was even mentioned in the film.

>>15311567
The Sykes-Fairbane is a pretty keen blade. If you can find yourself a triangular bayonet or stiletto though, you’re golden. Those triangular holes are much harder to stitch closed, and no need to remember to twist before pulling out.

>The funny part was Julia dissed this Julie bitch for what she was doing, and the diss was even mentioned in the film.

Yep!

The actual Julie was even more horrid than the film version. The real Julie blog was poorly written, featured tons of expletives, barely mentioned any actual details regarding prepping, cooking or the final results of the food. Julia Child basically said she felt Julie wasn't a serious cook and that she was cooking for a stunt.

In the movie you kind of feel bad for Julie, but that's because Amy Adams version is a lot cuter and sweeter and it portrays Julie as someone who is actually learning from the experience and is doing it for reasons other than "I want a book deal."

Agree with the previous posters. If anyone other than an actress as likable as Amy Adams had played Julie no one would have suffered to sit through the film (though that bit showing her at work shitting on 9/11 claim seekers was really an odd bit to include).

What really bothered me about the "Julie" half of the movie is that she, her husband, and friends are supposed to be foodies, but the meals they show, everyone is just stuffing their face while talking over each other - they aren't paying any attention to each other much less the food. Nora Ephron wrote some decent movies, but imho her work as a director was pretty much hack level.

meryl streep ruined this whole movie for me. i missed the beginning and thought i was walking in on an snl sketch. terrible acting. i know lots of people like meryl streep so im sorry to offend you but her impression of julia was just ludicrous.

>> No.15313271

>>15312846
She's a little too exaggerated, a little too loud in the vocals which took away from the impression and makes it harder to take the character seriously. Julia could get silly on the show but she DiIidn't TAAaaaalk LiIIke thIiiiss!!! while doing it. Streep does better in the moments where it needs to be quiet, like the letter from her sister about being pregnant.

Exactly. I talked about this with friends at the time the movie came out and the only one who caught this distinction was of the generation that watched Julia in her first shows and bought Mastering the Art when it was first published. All the younger "foodies" didn't see anything wrong with not paying attention to the food once it's served.

Well, to each their own.

this is another one that's a genuinely good movie but i am afraid to admit i like in public because it's cheesy or something.

perhaps i am learning something about myself. i depend on others for validation. probably because my parents withheld it when i was young. maybe that will be my new year's resolution- motivate myself, and depend less on others for validation.

ayyy i watched this when extremely strung out in Hai Phong. incidentally, i have a vivid recollection of that morning. I arrived in town the previous night after a long train ride from Saigon, as I was due to begin a teaching job in neighboring Ha Long a few days later. I found a hotel in the middle of the night, and when the sun was up took a walk around a nearby lake. For breakfast I had banh da cua, the local specialty noodle, and had a fun conversation with the gathered Vietnamese people who stopped for breakfast before work. Then I returned to my hotel, blissfully full, and snorted several lines of heroin as I watched this and the James Macavoy movie that's something like "A Cure for Sickness" with the spooky castle sanitorium. The 100 Foot Journey made me want to go to France, or back to India, or both, but I have done neither yet. I did however get off heroin, which I suppose is an accomplishment. 3 years ago today I overdosed while shooting up alone and should have died. I'm happy I didn't.
