Leave them in their normal shape, just stick them in so half is submerged and half is standing up, then as it softens gradually bend it and push it until the whole thing is in the water, as long as you do it asap at the start it doesn't really cause any unevenness in doneness by the time it's finished cooking

Take the linguini/spaghetti with both your hand, put one of their hand in the middle of the boiling water pot and twist your hands in opposite directions. This will twist them around and allow you to more easily push them into the pot as they begin to cook.
