I can just tell them apart by the sounds, don't even know any words. I have a harder time with Korean and Japanese, though, and I need to hear a Japanese word I know for confirmation a lot of times. But Japanese and Korean sound very different from Chinese.

Nah, it's the sounds. Mandarin has a lot of soft sounds spoken from the top of the diaphragm as well as lots of sounds that get dragged out while Korean and Japanese are both more guttural with shorter sounds akin to European languages. Japanese and Korean also have a lot of words that sound similar to each other which is what makes it harder to differentiate them in a vacuum.
