I worked in an ice cream parlor for like a year and a half, and no one comes into an ice cream parlor very often. Yet we got to know 'regulars' even though they only came there every 10 days or so.
The owner of the place was a family friend so I saw him a lot and got to know a bit of the small-restaurant owner's mind. They really do think of their customers a lot. If you come in even once a month they'll remember you.
