Can someone tell me how durian tastes like?
Every video i seen of food-tourism from asian countries has the people get really hyped when they find a durian.
Is it a trick or over reaction or it has some really good taste?

>> No.16381116

>>16381081
It is a glorious flavor. Very simply put there are two flavors, sweet and bitter. Sweet ones are simply creamy and sweet. 'Bitter' ones have more complex pungent flavor, where it is sweet with a bit of a bitter touch to it maybe from mild fermentation. Some varieties are MUCH tastier than others. One of my friends has a plantation with the highly sought after bittersweet 'mao shan wang' or musang king. The musang king fruit is so popular, and relatively expensive, that some stalls try to pass off common durians as musang king, a con. The flavor of a good quality durian is unlike any other fruit. It is NOT a meme in my honest opinion. It is like enjoying good cheeses or wines.

Pequí is a weird one, the edible part is the yellow one and you have to cook it for it to taste any good
But the catch is that, as you can see on the one cut in half, it has a fuckload of thorns inside it, so you have to be careful and not bite directly into it, but just nibble the half a centimeter of meat it has before you reach the thorns
And it has a very powerful and unique smell and taste, I can't really describe it honestly

Durians have a shelf life of 24 hours from harvest. Any longer than that and it will literally start to ferment and you can taste the alcohol which is not ideal. Durians CANNOT be frozen or chilled. Would you eat an apple after it has been frozen and thawed? The frozen crap you get in Asian supermarkets are shit and are not fit for consumption. Tbf, durian itself is already alcoholic even when harvested within 24 hours. Thats why it is creamy - it is due to overripening of the flesh. The flesh of a normal ripe durian has the same consistency like the flesh of jackfruit. Crunchy and fruity. Musang King, or the Mao Shan Wang cultivar in particular is popular because it taste like beer among our local chinese.

But yeah when you keep it longer outside of the shelf life, the alcohol content will grow until it eventually ferment to form lactic acid and then turn the alcoholic flesh into tempoyak or fermented durian cream, another highly sought umami bomb food condiments among the locals.

Mangosteen is super good. Always had it whenever it is fruit season in Malaysia. Truly deserve the moniker 'Queen of the Fruit'. Unlike durian which can be hit or miss, mangosteen is always a hit for everyone, especially if it is sweet. Just be careful with the sap leaking out when you open the shell though. The sap is kinda hard to remove when it stains your shirt.

>The flesh of a normal ripe durian has the same consistency like the flesh of jackfruit.
That's retarded. The consistency is softer. Also not every durian has high alcohol content, some are bitter but some are not. Good ones are not overripe, just ripe.

Mangosteen is quite rare because they're seasonal but also they ripe FAST, I imagine it's a transport problem to export them. It is the queen of fruit, durian is the king

In French this fruit is synonymous with "worth nothing".
travailler pour des nèfles = working for nothing
des nèfles ! = my ass !
etc

Fascinating thread, mostly because in the northern hemisphere we get about 10 different types of fruit and thats it. I would love to travel to the equator just to eat so many new things.

Here is a plantain (not the banana, the herb) and it grows on forest margins everywhere. The leaves make a decent salad. That and a few mints and a berry or two are about all we have for forage round these parts. Pretty envious of you macacos.

Was hoping my plant would get big enough and make fruit but a hard freeze basically killed it. Came back but now it's a tiny juvenile plant. ):

Anyway, don't know if it's been posted yet but these bastards are quite tasty. They are common enough tree around where I live but most people don't even know they're edible.

Turk's Cap is good, leaves, flowers, and berries. Berries are lightly sweet not a whole lot of flavor, but nice enough when semi dry. Flower are kind of like hibiscus or something, sweet and lightly tart. Leaves are quite nice sautéd kinda like an 80/20 cross of spinach and okra. Eaten raw the leaves have a cucumber type taste. Also the plant grows like crazy and is naturally round up resistant lol. Been trying to rid my backyard of them for years finally gave up figure I'll just fucking eat them, they do better than anything I purposefully grow.

Miracle fruit. It makes anything you eat with it taste sweet. It is illegal to import into the US thanks to lobbying efforts of the snack industry who fear it will compete with their sugary sweets.
