Don't promise them anything. Just ask if you can pick some. They might just tell you to take all of them. If they're nice about it, you can give them something later on as a thank you gesture.

90% of fruit trees I see, none of the fruit is edible. As has been mentioned... birds, parasites, whatever. Unless you're actively tending to them, I don't think fruit trees are very worthwhile. But i also live in the desert.

Same. Wildlife generally gets to my peach tree before I have the chance to harvest.
Used to sit in my yard and take potshots at squirrels with my pellet gun so they'd fuck off but got a new job and don't have the time.
>>16565202
As for OP, just ask them for some you sperg. When I do get a decent harvest I gladly give them away.

you could be neighborly and go talk to them about Le situation. Who knows, maybe they'll offer you the opportunity to pick them if you leave and dont return until next year. That's the best you could hope for given how insane it is that you've noticed something mundane in your neighborhood and decided to make a full post about it. Thread ain't that comfy bro, sorry.

Knock on their door and ask if you can pick the apples. Offer to pick a bagfull for them as payment.
I have got so much free produce over the years by doing this. It's not like I can't afford to just buy my fruit and veggies but like you I don't like seeing good food being wasted.

always pick as soon as the tree starts bearing fruit, and you have to do it as soon as it starts bearing fruit in its life. Animals unironically don't notice until they're ripe, and if you pick all ripe ones as soon as they are ripe, then they never notice. They'll remember if they ever get even a nibble of it.

We supply just about our entire neighborhood with their years' cooking apple supply via an endlessly fruitful apple tree that stands right in the middle of everyone's houses. theyve all asked at different points, and we're always terribly happy they will get used and enjoyed, because we could never use even a tiny fraction of the amount this tree produces. some come many times a day with deep buckets and a ladder, some like the riper windfalls for pastries pies and applesauce, some are families out walking with little kids, and the parents let the kids each pick a fruit to snack as they go, snd use the tree to teach them life life lessons, we've been gifted endless exquisite cookies, sauces, beautiful breads sweets and pies from elderly couples who had an extremely successful artisan business when they were you ger selling such, etc.
ask op and ye shall probably receive. we loved the gifts but we equally loved the pleasure and great use everyone got from the apples which otherwise would have just had to have been tossed into our ditch to prevent wasps moving in,

I harvest a fey dozen bushels from around my town. No one picks there apples. I make sauce, dried apples, feed them to my birds. I bought a cider press this year so Ill be making lots of cider. Or lots of applejack.
