An old fashioned is an extremely, EXTREMELY common cocktail and no one will give two fucks if you order it.

There are two common variations on the old fashioned. There's the prohibition-era old fashioned, which is an orange peel muddled with a sugar cube, hit with two dashes of angostura and stirred with two ounces of bourbon. It'll be served in, you guessed it, an Old Fashioned glass, usually garnished with a brandied cherry. That's how common this cocktail is: it has its own glass.

The other version is what you'll get in a speed bar. It's usually an orange slice or two, a maraschino cherry, and a sugar cube, angostura, and two ounces of bourbon. They won't muddle it, they'll usually just shake the shit out of it for ten seconds and serve it in a pint glass.

This is absolutely not true. MOST bars have bartenders with the knowledge of applebees bartenders. They know how to make the advertised menu drinks and the most basic jameson and ginger, rum and coke, gin tonic, etc. If you really want an old fashioned, go somewhere that has it on their drink menu (a nice steakhouse or a real cocktail bar) or make it yourself. It's not hard.
