I have two bars within literally a 2min walk of my front door. But despite being born and living in this small rust-belt town must of my life I really have no common hobbies/interests with any of the other regulars or even the bartenders, so beyond saying hi or talking about the weather no conversation lasts.
They also have musical events, but I don't like country and it's only been variations on country. I like a bit of soccer, but they only show American football and baseball and I don't really care about the particular teams.

If you close the tab for every drink they have to print a receipt and have you fill in the tip and sign it, plus opening the tab is a longer process than just adding an item to an existing one. When a purchase is finalized you have to sign either a paper or electronic receipt, and on that receipt there's a field to add a tip to your total. Pic related is a basic template for a bar receipt. If you close out the tab for every drink they have to print this receipt and have you sign it every time. They do it for security reasons; if the transaction is wrongfully disputed they can show a record of your signature to prove you authorized the transaction. So if you let them leave the tab open, you only get 1 receipt to sign before you leave.

Tipping is exclusive to restaurants and bars. All bars and sit-down restaurants will have you sign a receipt, but other businesses it depends on the typical transaction sizes. For example, you won't have to sign a receipt at a convenience store or fast food drive-thru where you're unlikely to spend more than $50, but you'll always have to sign at an electronics store and most regular grocery stores where it's much more common to have large transactions of over $100.

But anyway, that's the purpose of running a tab in American bars, to cut down on all that hassle. It's no different from paying at the end of a sit-down restaurant meal, but they swipe your card at the beginning so that if you try to run off without paying they can just charge your card as needed at the end of the night. It keeps the drunks honest.
