The problem is people try to order the second way when the first is faster, and you’d know that if you worked as a wagon in high school like you should.
Each item has to be put in separately into the POS, so things being said all at once makes it easy to forget about those.
You also use retarded specialized language. Where I’m from, Dry means alcohol is illegal. We’d say no sauce if we want sandwiches with no sauce. You saying less explicit language means it needs to be read back to you slower to make sure it’s rights.
There’s also a script you have to fallow, and the managers are listening, and will get on your ass if you don’t fallow the script. You getting asshurt about the sales and stuff and trying to do things other than the script slows things down, since they have to get back on script.
Usually, it’s not even the order taking time. It’s the cashing-out process. There’s one person doing the POS, so they can either take orders or cash them out. You’re not going anywhere until the guy in front is cashed out, so be patient.
Go inside if you want to order faster. You’ll be at the front of the line because America is fat and lazy, and thinks taking more time and gas in the drive thru is worth it to not have to stand up.

It also seems like the hold up tends to be large orders(minivans) rather than long order times per se.

Just taking the orders in parallel has benefits. It would eliminate the labor and delays of taking orders over a speaker, like this thread is about, supply more information and longer lead times to work with, and grant the ability to prioritize. Some people just want a coffee or french fry and can be served instantly. Some orders have hold-ups instead like running out of nuggets and waiting on a new batch.
Most well-run drivethroughs use the phrase ""Can you pull around and park in the front?" very frequently to make their process slightly less serial, and that alone greatly improves the average wait time.
