Spouts matter. I found my fellow can "bubble" a bit out of the spout at high temps giving a "choppy" flow. I assume its just bubbles making their way up and out since it can happen at low flow too.

Happens with my fellow too sometimes. I think it is because steam/water has clogged up those 3 little air holes on the lid and it's created a semi-airtight environment inside the kettle. When that happens to me I tip the kettle back so the spout is facing up for a second, and the kettle will audibly suck in some air. The flow gets better after that.

Chemex calls it the 3 cup model, but those would be miniscule cups of coffee. It is the perfect size for 1 cup of coffee.

Any recommendations for a new coffee machine? Just a casual drinker that wants a decent machine, willing to invest a bit but don't want anything high end and overly expensive either since I don't have money to burn.

Previously used a Delonghi Magnifica, would like something similar but a tad above in quality.

lactase breaks lactose into sugars so lactose free(full cream) tastes sweeter and creamier, combine that with heat and then whipped into foam that behaves almost like a meringue and you have yourself perfect milk foam. you can get the job done with just one of those spinning hand frothers, it takes a bit of time to really get it good but its worth it. i like to rest my coffee after i pour it for a minute or so which is plenty of time to froth the milk. getting the technique down will take the most time, also dont use the amount of milk you want because it won't be enough to get it the proper amount of foam( i think this has to do with width of the cup you are using, i am using a large wide mug but i feel a though it might work faster and with less milk in a tall skinny cup.).
also milk temp is very important, obviously too high and it ruins the flavor(although a high temp+proper frothing with lactose free full cream milk can create an almost custard flavor which is very interesting.) too low and bubbles won't form properly.

using this method i have started putting less sugar in my dark roasts (i hate dark roasts but sometimes thats all i have so i add sugar to balance the harsh flavor) because the foam is so sweet and almost creamy that it can take the harsh notes even out of some of the dark italian roasts that i have.

(for a special treat put a small amount of sugar into the milk before heating and frothing it. amazing. i still have to experiment with some mocha combinations/techniques)

if you can't understand why that test was conducted then you are genuinely mentally retarded.

its to test which has the most consistent stream over x distance, testing stream consistency from 1 inch is worthless and a foot seems like a reasonable maximum pour distance where consistent stream would be desirable, so the test was created and the candidates were tested and the test results were shown so that people interested in maximum stream consistency could be informed so that they could create a properly informed decision.

the fact that this didnt occur to you instantly is extremely worrying.

Ive been using the set up for about 8 months, but its become a bit of a drag. Manual machine + having to preheat + manual grinder + cleaning process means it takes at least 7-10 minutes to pull a shot and back to back shots arent easy.

Thinking about picking up a cheap grinder for pourover/french press. Once the JX Pro is dialled in for a particular bean for espresso, its a ballache to take it out of that setting to to make pour over and then have to try and dial in again when I want to go back to espresso. It does have numbers so in theory it shouldnt be that difficult but often feels like I have to go through the process all over.

a foot is enough to cool your water considerably. no one who cares about their brew is using a smart kettle with a dialed in temp to pour from a foot in the air. it doesn't matter which kettle pours the best from 2 feet when at the functional range they're virtually indentical.

I just popped in to say that I pour boiling water from a foot and a half high from my trusty 60-year-old, rolled-egde 1.5qt stainless Revere ware sauce pan. 99 times out of 100 I don't spill a single drop and my water stream is thinner than a no.2 pencil. That first high pour is so that I need not stir after the bloom. The second pour is from 12", a perfect spiral from edge to center. The third pour is from 4-6". My beds are flat as fuck every time without stirring or swirling. I have ridiculous dexterity though.

Quick question for you guys who have one of those Stagg kettles: do those things last? I saw that they have 1500W, so they must boil pretty darn fast. I also like the idea of a temperature hold. A lot of times heating appliances that you use multiple times a day will burn out the heating elements in 6 months or something. It'd be a total drag for4 how expensive those are. It did. The new Mk4 comes with a transparent (plastic) "polymer" jar and a brown glass jar. You can still buy replacement clear and brown glass jars. No idea if they plan on discontinuing the glass. The threads of the two types are interchangeable. The newest version also changed the shape of the plastic crossmember inside the chamber. It's now more angular and does not have the circular indent around the upper bearing because small beans would get stuck in there. I needed to know these details before buying a grinder for that price. I did not buy it. I went with one of the high-end 1zpresso grinders. I'm the same person who grilled the Stagg kettle guy above. just a meme, you'll ensure a high extraction which will taste less acidic although it will contain more acid than a lower extraction by a small amount. He also conflates acidity and bitterness near the end, as well as conflating tasted acidity with the acid produced by the stomach that may cause stomach discomfort.
