War time rationing and American industrialism caused that.

Although, even great chefs of that era in France like Bucuse were making basic food smothered in cream sauces and it was top tier food back then, it's just mediocre at best now. The whole 'fine dining' world was just starting to spread out from being exclusively large groups and banquets.

Nearly every other week in the early 90s.
Their newspaperr coupons were buy one get one and they had chicken cordon bleu and a massive salad bar.
Victoria's station, in the 80s, gave away the leftover from their prime rib carving, really good grilled beef ribs All you can eat for like $7.99 plus salad bar, soup, baked potato bar, etc, and was my 1st favorite, because they were located in a mall, so you'd meet a friend and have a nice dinner after your shopping spree in Dadeland.

My mom used to take me and my brother here all the time. I would almost always get fried chicken, lima beans, mashed potatoes, and cornbread in a kid sized portion. Things started changing in the late-90s and by the mid-2000s they had to close down. The area (my hometown) had become overrun with you know who. Blacks reopened the restaurant and were quickly forced to change the name. We went there once as a family after that and then never again. It was awful.
I also miss walking down main street and going to parades and the fall festival. It's sad what it's like there now.

Too staid, is my guess. In the 1930s when fast food joints first started to pop up, hamburgers were a bit cheaper and quicker to make on a griddle. By the 1960s when fast food really took off as a concept, ‘plain anglo food’ was seen as boring and old-fashioned and just wasn’t marketable. At least not in the US. Hamburgers, being german, didn’t have that same cultural stigma. It’s only gotten worse since then, with the proliferation of chinese and mexican immigrants making their cuisine the standard ‘exotic’ option. Most americans don’t even eat savoury pies anymore outside of special occasions like thanksgiving. Pies here are mostly dessert fare.

Most of my childhood favourites still exist, I went to one yesterday with my wife and 2 kids and it was like time stood still. I love that kind of continuity. There is one thing that is gone though and it's the Westerbouwing. History buffs may know it because it was of some importance during operation Market Garden. You could eat pancakes there, ride a cable lift and a swan shaped car. Also there was a pro tier playground. Sadly it went bankrupt in the 2000s

I think what killed it here was the jump in price on wings over the years, and the area it was in was supposed to be developed into a commercial retail shopping area, but the owners of the local mall bribed the local city politicians to not approve the opening of the new businesses. >The nuclear family that you're thinking of only lasted a few decades in the 20th century out of the entirety of human history,

Not the person you are arguing with, but NOPE! a family composed of a man, woman and children has been the basic unit of society since societies were formed.

The world is splitting into people who have the income skills, and traits to keep a family together and those that don't. My parents and wife's parents came from stable families, We have a stable family and our kids have good jobs and will be forming families of their own. The reason is that we are disciplined and have built habits that keep us inoculated from the swings and excesses of modern culture. Friends and neighbors who got sucked into bad lifestyles are now either dead or wish they were dead.

I'm glad Quiznos died. The flavors were great but the employees were more braindead than McDonalds. Not a single one could properly toast the sub and they all came out dry and sharp enough to cut my mouth. Firehouse is better anyway.

I find this fascinating that they stock up so much and then waste a lot of it. I always assumed Asians were pretty conservative as someone who lived in Japan on base and saw the culture and people's. Wasn't the leader of China having a campaign against being wasteful with food? As someone who visited China before they became a super power and have seen the effects after, it is strange. I remember most of China was nothing but slums that were akin to a North Korean dystopia, buildings rotting, with poor almost peasant like people's in cloths almost out of another time period trying to sell handmade toys and nick nacks to the tourists. I remembered the tourist bathrooms didn't work, and they had multiple signs reading "Please do not shit in the sinks", the literal word "shit" in English. Mind you this was back in the mid to late 90's, I remember going to the Great Wall of China and protestors came out with banners written in English protesting the government and asking for help, then a government black van that tailed our tour bus, came up with AK's and put black masks over their heads and took them away, our tour guide said "Don't take pictures, don't take pictures or they will take you away too", I doubt some pre-super-power Chinese soldiers wanted the headache of arresting US Naval Officers on vacation from Japan while touring China's most prized national landmark being arrested for taking a photo. Very strange days back then and now strange days triple'y so. But strange to see China struggling, to now almost becoming proto-Americanized with food waste when in their history not so long ago with the famines and cultural revolutions took so many of their own. Seems Western influence had a net-positive effect. As for the food in China at the time, it was okayish, strangest was scorpion and tarantula, the best was the Peking duck, best I've ever had. Scuse' me if I ranted.
