Check for sales. Buy those. Stock up on holidays when certain cuts become loss leaders and get really cheap.

Get a live trap, get possum/coon, kill possum, skin and gut, cook eat possum (or raccoon).

Heads up if you suspect varmint has been eating garbage I recommend feeding it corn for a few days to clean out its system (also put a dog bowl in the trap so you can fill it up with water) and then kill the animal.

a 50 lb bag of field corn ranges anywhere from 8-10 dollars and will last you hundreds of possums/raccoons,

the pre-cooked chickens from the hot food section of grocery stores most times is cheaper than buying an uncooked whole chicken and you can use that carcass to make chicken stock
when i was going to school i would always shop
otherwise look for sales and don't be afraid to buy in bulk and portion it out because you can always freeze what you won't/don't want to eat soon
