It can't taste like coke can it? Most people said root beer tastes absolutely atrocious, and that's why I want to try it. There are so many things in this world that I like that everybody else says is disgusting, so the chances of me liking it is actually pretty high.

Root beer has a flavor that is kind of similar to wintergreen, lots of euros don't like it because it reminds them of toothpaste. Depending on the brand, it can have a lot of notes; caramel, vanilla, cinnamon, anise, licorice root, birch, etc.

Root Beer was originally made of the Sarsaparilla root, but they discovered that sarsaparilla causes cancer, so now it is made of Sassafrass root, which has a very similar flavor, as well as background flavors of wintergreen, birch bark, and caramel.

As you can see, you will get 100 different answers. Some brands make me think I hate root beer (Barq's, Mug, etc). I can tolerate Boylan sometimes. Other times it tastes too medicinal.

Brands like Frosty, A&W, IBC are refreshing and nice (to me) - but the lean to the sweeter, highly carbonated side. In short - try a few brands - you may hate one and love another.

Don't buy Barq's. Try a good glass bottle bramd like Sprecher's or something. The taste will remind you of the wintergreen cold medicine you had as a kid. Ours is all cherry flavored, so we would find Vimto to be nasty like you would find Root beer.

Best root beer I've ever had was called Fizzy Izzy.
I picked it up from a tiger sanctuary in Missouri and it was named after one of the cats they took care of.
That might sound like a weird mixture, but the sanctuary was in a region known for wine making.
I suspect the owners of the sanctuary were also professional wine makers, but wanted an child-friendly alternative for field trips.

I still have a bottle in my basement, but it's been 6 years and I'm scared to open. Also, given that tigers only have a life span of 10, there's a good chance that Izzy is dead now.

It's a fruity flavor, but it doesn't come from a fruit. It's earthier.
It's more like cinnamon or vanilla. It more of a scented spice that's awful by itself but tastes great when you dilute it and mix it with sugar.
