I grew up on the gulf. I know exactly what I'm doing. I rinse them well in the cooler and get the mud off but I never purge them. It doesn't make a noticeable difference.

You buy them by the sack like that. Then to transport them you throw them in a cooler on ice to keep their core temperature down. When you get them home you throw them in a kiddie pool full of water and you purge them by adding a few pounds of salt. Then you drain the water and allow water to pour over them until it runs clear and you can boil them.
