the orange chicken i get at my local place is pretty different from their general tso's. Maybe it varies but their orange chicken has orange peel in the sauce so it's much more of an orange flavor

g-tso doesn't have sesame seeds or green onions on it and sesame chicken is literally g-tso with sesame seeds and green onions on it.

RECIPE: General Tso’s Chicken

As adapted by the crew of The Search for General Tso

Ingredients:

1 pound boneless chicken thighs
(Chef Peng leaves the skin on — up to you!)

GMO-free canola oil, for deep-frying
(General Tso didn’t eat GMOs, why should you?)

1 T peanut oil

1 1/4 cups corn starch, plus 1 tsp
(Fuchsia Dunlop uses potato flour, fun if you can find it!)

1 egg
(General Tso likely preferred organic eggs)

2 T soy sauce, divided
(You’ll use 1 T for the marinade, and 1 T for the sauce)

Dozen dried whole red chilies

1 T tomato paste

1 T rice vinegar

1 tsp sesame oil

Dash of sugar or tsp of honey
(Chef Peng would not approve.)

Dash of chili paste or hot sauce
(Spice it up as you see fit.)

1/4 cup Chicken Stock
(Sequel: The Search for General Tso’s Chicken Stock?)

2 cloves of garlic, minced

1 T ginger, minced
Optional:

Orange zest, plus orange slice for garnish
(Only if you live in CA; then you’re making Orange Chicken)

Sesame Seeds
(This more or less turns it into Sesame Chicken.)

No scallions! Or some! Sliced on the bias.
(Chef Peng serves his up sans scallions, but add if you like.)

Broccoli, steamed
(Chef Peng would not approve, but standard in America.)

what about other asian restaurants? my local thai restaurant brags on their menu that they don't use MSG, but I don't know about the rest. I don't really care to ever eat at a chiense food restaurant, orange chicken is the only thing I want from them, and other asian restaurants already have that. the restaurants that serve more authentic chinese food are generally more fancy and expensive and aren't run by fobs.

My old local chinese placed had an extra spicy, bourbon, and a honey variant of general tsaos and they were all really good. Orange chicken isnt bad every now and then but its too sweet for me and I prefer the more hearty general tsaos

There's this local Chinese place in my hometown that serves the best General Tsao's chicken I've ever had. I go there at least once a month and for $9 bucks I get a carryout of it along with a shit ton of rice. The sauce is good I always drizzle it over my rice, too.

Its taste and texture are nothing like General Tsao's anywhere else so whenever I ordered the dish at other Chinese places I'd get disappointed. I honestly don't know why they call it General Tsao's but as long as they serve it, I'm happy.
