I went to the local roaster to have a pourover like I planned. They didn't have Guatemalan beans like I'm working on now, but they did have Peruvian beans that I struggled with through the whole bag. It turns out that Peruvian beans are just not really that good? The overextracted aftertaste was my fault for leaving the filter over the carafe for too long, but all the sour-bitterness and the soupy thinness that I blamed on my Hario hand mill are all there. Still better than Folgers I guess.

I’ve had the Jmax for a few months. Shouldn’t be in bad condition. What is the meaning of life? Still too fine for a flavorful filter coffee. Why can't these all-purpose grinders scale logarithmically between the espresso and brew settings? You shouldn't need to piss around with minute adjustments for a good pourover. This is why inch pattern rules and metric users stay poor.

I have one but I mostly use it for espresso. Not sure if I could recommend it for just pour over given it’s designed more for minute adjustments and that can get pretty annoying when switching from espresso to pour over but as a grinder I don’t really have any complaints so far. You should obviously have an idea of your own preferred tastes. From there it's a matter of filtering out by country origin then region then process etc. Eventually you will find the exact process of beans from a particular region as your favorites.

If you're only drinking blends to save money this is a pointless exercise since most blends tell you fuck all besides "maybe" what are the countries of origin. Your only option is to buy a bunch of garbage and get a general idea of your favorite roasters.

Normally you'd use a phin filter, but this only makes one fresh cup at a time. I've seen the people at the restaurants pull out a gallon jug of premade coffee (sweeteners and all) and just pour it over ice. And it doesn't taste the same as what gets made with the filter.

Like the other anon said, I would not bother buying any grinder under $200. They are all trash and you should just burn your money for heat instead.
Personally I have a 1Zpresso JX that I use for my fishing trips once a week. I prefer french press because there's no filter I need to remember and I can just dump the grounds anywhere. Do your homework and figure out what you actually want. It would be a pain in the ass to mod and tweak and figure out you want a different machine in a year. I'd imagine you could (somewhat) easily adapt this shit to alot of those machines in the list if you had the heart to try.

Eh, it'd be fun if nothing goes wrong and/or you're already into this kind of tinkering. But if you just wanted a machine and kept hitting snags it could really wear you out.
Last time I tried to build a scale I got a shit ton of noise in the ADC without any idea why. I just wanted a scale at the time, not a new hobby, so I gave up pretty quickly.

I wired this this shit together a few years ago in a $20 popper with the intention of just using for a few weeks while I figured out an actual custom build for a roaster. Then it made great coffee I had zero complaints with so it never got changed. Now I want the exact same functionality, but with a little more power behind the heater so I snagged the new $80 popper from sweetmarias to wire all this shit into. I'll probably integrate a raspberry pi running artisan on this one instead of bluetoothing into another computer. I have no clue what I'm doing, but following guides is easy.
Sure, you could buy a much nicer e61 machine and drop $400+ on a sep and use your phone to log pressure, but a $3 arduino, $14 pressure sensor, and $25 display will accomplish the same thing.

When the parts are $1-4 on aliexpress, its usually smart to order two. Offset my thermocouples with a $50 kitchen thermometer. Pretty simple. I feel like fucking up a scale has really discouraged you. I actually burned up an adc while I was setting up the roaster, added 4 days to the project and I got some practice desoldering and cleaning up small pads. The hard part is the dev side, not sourcing components. Try again. I'm about to figure out how to tune FSRs so I can mod some ddr pads.

>> No.18127995

>discouraged you
Nah I was already almost burnt out by then, the uncertainty of whether my parts are faulty or if they were never capable in the first place pushed me over. In your case at least the damage is visible, so you'd know what to do next.

>Offset my thermocouples with a $50 kitchen thermometer
In this case you do have something to verify your parts against. But in the case of a pressure monitor it means building one of those pressure gauge portafilter, assuming the pressure at the portafilter and at the boiler is the same (I've heard pressure reading can vary depending on where you measure it).

>> No.18129528

depends on how fast you are with the flair.
you need to have good timing and be ready to go the second the kettle boils.

its possible to make thermal management a non issue but only if you have the skill.
