The only reason there's a stigma against distilling your own alcohol is because the government can't collect taxes on it. It's perfectly safe if you know what you're doing.
The first stuff that comes off the still contains all the methanol, so people making it in huge batches foolishly assuming the freshest stuff is the best would take a swig of pure methanol and destroy their optic nerve. That's where the thing about it making you go blind comes from.
