18182863 No.18182863 [Reply] [Original]

Can we have an alcohol thread? So I don't drink and don't know shit about anything, but I want to get a bottle of whisky for my bro. Was thinking of getting some Japanese brand, since I'm sure he'll get several bottles of the default good ones, and I wanted to get something more unique, that's also not a shit meme.

Any recommendations around the 50 bucks mark? Could be more too. A friend told me about Lagavulin, but that has to be a go to one he'll get 10 bottles of.

Talk about anything else too, like what you're getting shit faced off of right now.

Japanese whiskey is overpriced for what its worth.
Depending on your location, you can get Russells Single Barrel for a solid bourbon or Maccallan 10 if you want a flavorful and inoffensive scotch

I know about video games and cars, and I'm not getting him either. It is what it is bro, sometimes you just have to get these basic bitch gifts and hope they really like it. I haven't had this one, but I've tried several high end Japanese Whiskeys and never like them.

Just looking into it more, the one posted is a pale colored blend with no stated age that sells for around 80-120 bucks. That seems really expensive for what it is, and you can get some really good whiskeys and interesting whiskeys for that price. Apparently reviewers love it, but it really seems like bandwagoning. Will say it's cool that it's 51%...

If you're still kicking around the idea of getting something Japanese to be a little different or for the aesthetic I'm not a great help but I have tried one. Mars Iwai which comes in 80 or 90 proof is from what I've read the closest to a bourbon that the Japanese get. It does taste almost like a bourbon but not quite, so it's a fun novelty. It's the only whiskey I prefer with ice, but that could be because I can only find the 90 proof where I live and the higher alcohol gets a bit in the way of the taste.

So here’s some real-weeb talk about why a lot of Japanese whiskey in America is “overpriced”
A lot of that stuff is rebranded “export-only” stuff. Basically an importer will pay a Japanese distillery to bottle some of their cheapish stuff with his label, and of course the distillery will use a different bottle if they have a recognizable one tied to their brand.
There is a LOT of cheap whiskey in Japan. Even the “regular” Suntory (kakubin) is cheap as fuck.
And then Suntory also makes “Torisu” which is even cheaper; like $25US for a 4-fucking-liter-bottle cheap.
Suntory doesn’t rebottle their stuff for importers, I’m just using that pricing as an example.

But that’s the sort of thing you’re buying with most Japanese whiskeys available in the west. Most of what you’ll find in a store, people in Japan wouldn’t even recognize because of the rebranding.
Unless it’s from Suntory, Mars, or Nikka, it’s likely a rebrand.
Which is also why those 3 are the “good” ones, as they’re actually putting their name on it.

If you want a better gin around $30 I'd recommend Roku. Good enough to drink neat and makes interesting cocktails. The yuzu and tea notes are lovely.

Bar Hill is another excellent choice around $30. Their standard gin is only flavored with raw honey and juniper. It's well balanced and not too sweet. If you want a more complex and luxurious gin go for their Tom Cat ($50). They take the same gin and age it in whiskey barrels. Makes a god-tier Negroni/Boulevardier.

If you want cheap as possible but still good I'd go with Bombay Dry ($18, white label). It has less juniper than than their popular Sapphire but that allows the other botanicals to shine brighter. It's also cheaper than Sapphire too which is nice. Okay neat, good with ice, great in any cocktails. If that's too expensive Gordon's is a good alternative.

Thanks for the insight. I figured Suntori Mars and Nikka wouldnt be a rebrand. Thats the only Japenese stuff I see here in Chicago. Its like, the cheap shit wouldnt survive local competition and shipping costs so its why I tell people the price is too high for these whiskeys. >it doesnt matter though because people will buy what they want, I have a friend who bought Eagle Rare for $100.
What kept me away from getting stuff like Harmony and the other $70+ Japanese whiskeys is there are so many bourbons that go for the same price. EC Barrel Proofs, even the bad batches fuck.

> There's actually a ton of really good rums that are super cheap because they haven't become meme's like whisky and tequila.
Also because it's a total joke of a category. Rum, for the most part, has no rules or regulations. You can add coloring, sugar, spice, whatever you want. Age statements are essentially fake as well. That doesn't make it a bad category but if you're talking about prices you can't ignore the shit show that is the category of "rum."

Whiskey actually has regulations which is what contributes to higher prices. Tequila has "regulations" but it's being regulated by a narco state so take that as you will.

That’s a big part of why Suntory doesn’t do the rebrand thing, nor export any of their cheap whiskey to the US.
Since they own Jim Beam, they’re good on the cheap whiskey market share in the US. If they also exported cheap stuff, they’d only be competing with themselves.
So they only send the expensive stuff.

And heck, even Suntory’s cheap stuff isn’t at all bad. It’s just meant for mixing.
Pic related; the Suntory “Kaku highball”. Pretty much anywhere in Japan that serves alcohol has it on the menu.

The one I posted is *always* served with ice when a place makes it.

Sake is hit/miss.
Even in Japan, it’s an insanely regional thing. The only national brands of sake are either insanely cheap (like Ozeki one-cup shit) or expensive, like Dassai.
99% of sake you find in US liquor stores or “Japanese” restaurants is terribly overpriced for what they’re selling.
The only rules of thumb are to look for certain “classifications”.
“Junmai” = unalduterated sake. Not that non-jummai is automatically bad, but it simply means it’s made of only rice, water, and koji. Think of it as the sake equivalent of “Bavarian purity law”.
Then there is “ginjo” and “daiginjo”, which are based on how much of the rice is milled away.
So an oversimplification (but still usable rule of thumb) would be to say “Junmai Ginjo” = Premium, and “Junmai Daiginjo” = Ultra Premium.
My personal favorite sake is Dassai 23 (pic related), but my wife and I only buy it for special occasions.
Unfortunately it’s way overpriced in the US, due to it having become very popular in Japan over the past few years. So even in Japan, supply is short, and exports are limited.

It's actually spelled a couple different ways in Armenia, included cognac, conjack, konjac, konyak, etc. Just last year, the EU had to bribe various Armenian brandy producers to the tune of over 3 million euros to promise to stop labelling their products "cognac". Some Armenian vineyards which call their product "cognac" have been around longer than the international treaty that protected the term's origin.

Here's an interesting article on the controversy, production, and popularity of Armenian "cognac": https://www.rferl.org/a/armenian-brandy-cognac/31314620.html

Canada has nice creme de cassis, and of course it's great as an apertif and to soak some dessert cakes or flavor ice cream, and Cassis Mona & Filles makes a knockoff of Madeira as well. Your local prices will be good for them.

It is just people trying to get a buzz on at the start of their meal. It's heated, so it's a warming drink. And,yes, it's not good stuff. Weeabos like to do all things Japanese like that. It's just a neutral spirit that doesn't interfere with the food, but doesn't help it much either. Like tea ceremony traditions, pouring your friend a shot is a social courtesy.
Now, plum wine can be yummy, but it's also a low end item.

It’s made in Berkeley, CA. Figured I’d start with that
>whats the big appeal of sake?
It’s can be delicious, and there’s infinite variety of flavor profiles. Much like fruit wine. I think it’s a bit crazy for someone to say “I don’t like wine”, as there’s countess ways of making it. There’s bound to be wines people hate and wines people adore, based on their personal taste.
>compared to fruit wine its just kind of lacking in any noticable taste
Well you aren’t going to find fruity taste. You’re going to find sake taste, which can range from very light to fuck-you-strong
>the average farmer in 1000 ad
In Japan would have been a rice farmer, and set about working to improve what he makes with what he has available.

In all seriousness though, here’s the thing.
There are countless sakes. Each tastes different. And most aren't exported at all. Even in Japan, many of the best ones can’t be had very far outside the region they are produced.
So in the west, a lot of the sake found in stores is either going to be made in the west, or is going to be relabeled cheap shit (like the whiskey in >>18189379), or it’s going to be an ultra-premium that costs more than most are willing to spend on something they’re unfamiliar with. Most westerners aren’t going to know the styles/grades even if labeled in English.
Also, the simple fact is most sake breweries don’t care about international markets. They aren’t factories with scalable capacity; they already sell every drop they brew. No need to export unless you’re a relabeling shop who can’t get Japanese to buy their shit.
As such, they don’t cater to the west with marketing or packaging.
Pic related. Was $80 in a US liquor store with a good import section.
There’s literally nothing on the packaging which would indicate anything to anyone who doesn’t know what it is. Much less why it’s worth $80 if you find it outside Japan.

No. The main argument for ANY taxation is to make money. Why tax imports? Government wants money and the domestic makers want a leg up on their international competition so they can make money.

Also, nobody was talking about taxes. Sending stuff anywhere cost money. The further it goes the more it costs. Simple economics. Toss regulatory expenses, marketing, larger volumes, and other stuff on top of that.

Yup, >>18197770 and >>18205088 are me.
Just remember that they aren’t necessarily “ratings”, just more like “processing style”.
Daiginjo is almost always going to be more expensive than ginjo. Not necessarily because it’s “better”, but because more of the rice is milled away. So it’s automatically going to be more expensive because you end up with less ingredient to begin with.
But a lot of people do find the daiginjos more enjoyable, as the increased milling reduces a lot of the harsher flavor notes that cheaper sake often has.

People eagerly await my response and I have to pretend that it's so great that I don't hurt their feelings. This has happened several times to me. Certain things just get hyped for no reason, whiskeys from Japan seem to be hyped right now. Maybe it's all mental, but a lot all the ones I've had just taste like they're trying to be something else.

For instance what OP posted. It's a Japanese/Scotch blend of various in house brands, that's rumored to have color added, and doesn't have a stated age, min age should be around 4 years in the blend. Yet somehow it was voted whiskey of the year by some site and it did not taste very good to me. Seems like a hype train, nothing more.

bourbon is 98% trash so why overpay for woodturd reserve. The only bourbon I like is blantons but this guy is a poor fag.

even if that was true (which it isn't) dude you recommended woodford reserve lmao

Yeah Woodford is well know and super popular, same with four roses, but they are accurately rated. BT is just not good and the only reason people buy it is because it's associated with the company that makes Stagg and Pappy. Claiming it's 100X better than woodford is retarded.

It was literally started as a marketing ploy because the distillery didn't have a namesake bourbon, so they just made one as a PR move. Not to mention the guy that claims to love rye picked a bourbon with a super low rye content. He's dumb, his taste is bad, and he has no idea what he's saying.

Yeah I heard it something about the way it has to be made so there is not much difference. But I can definitely taste a difference taste between each brand. I see, might try a WT 101 Rye then

Marinades are only good if home made. Store bought ones are always a little gross. I like bourbon, rye bourbon does seem more niche than bourbon though.

I like bourbon and am trying many different brands. I like WT 101. Jim Beam and Evan Williams 1783. WT 101 is a game changer to me.

lol I know that was mainly a joke. Whole point is this guy has no clue what he's talking about.

Woodford has like twice as much rye content than BT. Which is why I like it, and why I suggested it. It's accessible, but has interesting characteristics, and doesn't cost too much.

Rittenhouse Rye blows WT101 out of the water IMO. Cheaper too.

Woodford should definitely taste good, its considered high end in Canada.. Never tried though.
>>18212693
Not in here in Canada, here WT 101 non rye is 43.00 and Rittenhouse is 49.00. (same tier though)

Yeah I gotta disagree, Rittenhouse is too young, there is a strong smell of alcohol that goes away with age, but it is still good, just not on the same level as Wild Turkey 101.

have you ever had any other Heaven Hill product? that's a signature note in nearly all of them and signifies the price.

>> No.18212913

Yeah I know, most distilleries will wait like 6 years at least before they bottle it not 4 because of that.
Wild Turkey 101 is basically the same price as Rittenhouse but it is 6-7-8 year old Bourbon in it, it is just a better deal.

big distilleries can afford to wait longer yes, but the distinct ethanol presence in HH stuff is mostly to do with their practices when producing the whiskey.

typically short fermentation, rushed distillation, pushing as far into the feints as they can when cutting the process and bog standard barrels along with using the cheapest grains available are big factors as well as rickhouses that may as well be built by a prison architect.
