I've never really been a liquor guy but I've been trying to get some sense of taste for it
>jameson tastes like isopropyl alcohol, literally no taste
>bushmills was more tolerable but still no flavor
>wild turkey 101 tastes like plastic
>tried a sip of st remy brandy that I use for cooking and it tastes like napalm
>four roses bourbon was alright but kinda sickly sweet even as a mixer
>bought a bottle of buffalo trace and it's actually really good but I have no idea what I'm tasting
buffalo trace has this sour/tangy thing going on and I'm really liking it

I just have no idea what kind of scotch/whiskey/bourbon/etc adjacent drinks I like yet so I was more looking at trying out different styles than just going all in and spending 100€ on a single bottle that might be generally considered to be amazing but has a chance of not exactly being to my taste.

Go for old sherry if you have literally any 2 regular off the shelf bottles already and by old I mean bottled in or before the 80s or at least distilled no later than 1996 and using first or second fill PX/Olorosso.

>> No.18315133

the sherry industry doesnt produce enough actual sherry to keep up with the scotch needs so they sell seasoned casks at a premium and will keep their best wood for themselves since they use a solera system.

nowadays its typically american oak getting a bit of sherry syrup(Arrope) and then being toasted/charred before having new make filling the cask for a quick sherry influence. European oak is more genuine experience, but they still use this method more often than not when working with Scotch.

not only that but standards are being pushed aside for quick turnover since they typically dont let a sherry barrel air dry for 2 years anymore and instead just refill it a couple times before adding more syrup and recharring before being filled again.

Back in the old days they used something called Paque Surette(not sure on spelling) which isnt as big a change as the wood nowadays is very standard comparatively.

It's a hobby. You get out as much as you put into it.

Get a good bottle and actually smell and taste the drink instead of just chugging it down.
Think about what you smell and taste, try to put it into words.
Figure out what parts of that sensory experience you like, what parts you don't care for, and so on.

I have no fucking idea what you are even asking to be honest.
Tasting alcohol is like tasting anything else vs just stuffing it into your mouth to get nourishment.
Take it slow, think about what you are eating, maybe do some research to find out why things taste the way they do if you find it interesting, and just have a good time.
It's not something pretentious you need to worry about, literally just calm the fuck down and enjoy yourself.

"Tasting whiskey" isn't really just tasting whiskey. It's just tasting stuff and being able to put what it tastes like into words in general.
It applies to everything. Start thinking about the food you are eating, how does your bread taste, how does it smell, why is it like that, what parts of the taste and smell of the bread do you particularly enjoy, etc.
If it's rye bread you will start picking up on rye notes, which you then in turn can apply to whiskey tasting by realizing "ah, that particular aspect of the drink is kinda like rye."

You don't just drink a ton of whiskey and somehow start being able to put that kind of sensory experiences into words, it's something you actively need to school by thinking about it, by comparing and contrasting with other foods and drinks.

I think most calvados is good or decent because the market is small. It's hard to give advice because your local imports will be different. They use the same age nomenclature as brandy, so go with that for a start. Younger will have a brighter, more forward apple taste. Older will have a faded apple taste (still very present) but taste closer to brandy. They all have a really strong apple smell which is great. You can look up the brand too and see if they're well established. Should be from Normandy obviously and there's some extra regionalism beyond that with the labeling but that's probably not a big deal. Some cider producers will also make calvados so that can also help. Dupont for example makes great cider and calvados.

Pic related is available at my local store and I always get it. It's delicious, lots of aged flavor.

There is though. Regular Calvados can contain up to 30% pears, Domfrontais needs at leats 30% pears and is aged for at least 3 years instead of just 2. Pays d’Auge needs to be distilled in pot stills just like cognac. There are also different regulation on how many and which kind of apple/pear trees are allowed per hectare and stuff like that.

Pastis usually has sugar added but it's not cloying. It's similar to most ouzos, but less syrupy than sambuca if you're familiar with those. The majority of absinthes are bottled without sugar. Whereas pastis is mostly anise forward with any other botanicals in the background, absinthe is more balanced between anethole, wormwood and other flavors. Pastis is also about half the price of a quality absinthe. If you primarily like the flavor of anise go for pastis. If you want something more complex, look for a decent French or Swiss absinthe.

Keep in mind the taste isn't very consistent across runs because of that, if you directly compare two bottles from different runs you can definitely taste subtle differences.
It's a bit more artisanal I guess? They basically treat tequila with the care of a good single malt scotch.

It's pretty easy to get here in Europe, hell it's even on Amazon, like 30-40€ a bottle usually.

Their Blanco is pretty much just pure undisturbed Agave taste with some light Mint notes to accompany it. It's a very good clean Agave with nothing to disturb that flavor, but that's all it is - just Agave in its purest form really. So if you ever wanted to know what pure Agave really tastes like that's probably your best bet, especially at that price point it's pretty insane value with how pure it is.
I'd recommend their Reposado though. Aged in oak barrels for a few years which gives it a bit more of an interesting character.
