Escargot is a regional dish, and even in that region it's not really very common. They unironically eat lots of baguettes, frozen food, fast food, and just typical stuff like meat/veg/protein. They also love dairy. Not just butter and cheese, but milk and yogurt.

Snails are actually alright. "Eat ze bugs" memes aside, it's not so different from shellfish, and actually better because they're served basically floating in delicious savory garlic butter, with delicious hot crusty bread, and wine or pastis. The texture can be a little chewy, but not more so than octopus or squid, and everyone on the designated Food & Cooking board enjoys those too, yes?

I wish we could get over this artificial animosity between America and the rest of the world. America and France used to be frens, French food is generally awesome, can't we all just get along. I live in an area with a million Chinese, Indian, and Latin American restaurants but the only French restaurant closed during COVID shenanigans. And don't tell me that French cuisine has been entirely blended into generic American haute cuisine so it doesn't matter because we know that's not true. I just want a place where I can wear my beret and scarf and striped shirt, and openly shit on the sidewalk (à la mode de Paris) without getting heckled or arrested.

there are two types of snails: the big ones and small ones. i don't know their name in english lol

basically everyone enjoys the small ones, specially with beer, it's like a classic summer thing to do. the big ones are only enjoyed by some people, as the taste is more unique. only true enjoyers like them, so to speak.

Bullshit, Ortolan hunting is illegal since 1999 (article L411-1), and ortolan as a dish is completely unknown outside of some southwestern villages and fancy expensive as fuck parisian restaurants where a single bird was served for over 100€.
150 years ago it was already considered a pretty hardcore niche practice.

see this post, as it sums it up. The weird or expensive or fancy shit you are familiar with is just the noble food that survived thanks to the restaraunt system and then spread thanks to Escoffier's hotels in england and elsewhere (or rather, the hotels he worked at and embezzled shitloads of money from lmao)

>>18705100
that's because France is smack in the middle of continental europe with it's current or former territories stretching from the mouth of the Iberian peninsula over to the Mediterranean. It was also a breadbasket, which is part of the reason the Franks became so powerful.

OP asked "what do french people actually eat" and surprise it's fucking europoor peasant food same as anyone else. Anything uniquely french is the niche rare shit that wouldn't spread, yes like your snails or froglegs (which are relatively rare and regional).

I guess if you want WEIRD but also POPULAR, there's thinks like Sea Urchin, Foigras, These are common if expensive. 90%+ of france eats foie gras in some form at some point in the year. So if you want something weird or controversial but really common to throw your rope at, that'll be it. Also Pate in general really.

Lol the propaganda here is crazy. I have nothing against hating on the French, but at least make it something accurate like foie gras, vénerie, chocolatine/pain au chocolat divide, cheese and wine autism, mushroom wars etc etc

Update your hate game. I've lived in the Sud Ouest for the last 15 years and not even the old 90 year old lady I buy my newspaper from remembers the last time she ate ortolan, it was always a very niche dish, if only for the price if you weren't hunting your own. Also next time you troll on this subject, at least have the decency to include the cruelty of how it's caught and prepared. Do better.

Kek your own article discredits your claim of widespread consumption. I persist in my demand that you make up better stories if you want to hate on the French. Lazy. We don't even have Hooters here yet, to my great regret.

I don't really get the appeal of ortolans, it seems like you'd be mostly munching on bones really.

This article says the Nazis tried to put a stop to the consumption of ortolans during their occupation of France, 1940-1944. The Nazis thought it was too cruel. Just as soon as the Americans and British freed France in 1944 one of the first things the French did was to resume eating ortolans.
