I went to a sushi buffet today. $40 CAD /person.

I could've eaten more, but figured 86% stuffed was a respectable level to stop at.

I witnessed a black women fail at slurping a frozen smoothie out of a small cup with her nasty mouth, and, without even thinking, place it back down on the tray of smoothies cups. ICK.

Worst is probably something like Golden Corral; my immigration lawyer friend used to have clients invest in them because they get a green card that way under the EB-5 program. The owners don't care at all, they're just using it as a way to stay here. Best I've been to are brunch buffets at hotels and golf clubs, I just eat the prime rib, crab legs, salmon etc and order champagne or mimosas. I think the ones I've enjoyed the most are Indian, as smelly as the people are I feel bad for the buffet owners because they are losing when I eat there. People who order off the menu get a small entree for 15 to 22 bucks, but the buffet is like $16 and you can just scoop the meat chunks out of the curry/vindaloo and clean out the seekh kebab tray.

We have a few Vaguely Asian buffets with the hibachi grill, and all-you-can-eat garbage sushi, plus American Chinese food, and miscellaneous American stuff like fried chicken. Nice option for large groups with unknown dietary preferences--even folks on the "mental illness" side of the picky-eater spectrum can usually find something to choke down. The ones in our area are super-busy, which we take as a good sign--perhaps a slightly increased risk of customer hygiene/contamination issues, but it also means the food is being rotated constantly during peak business hours, so probably a net win. One complaint is no beer/wine, but I can understand how combining alcohol with such a gluttonous environment could spell WorldStar-style disaster.

Indian buffets are pretty mid in my experience. Partly because the spice level is reduced to "lowest common denominator" American palate--and partly because they're usually less busy, and items like rice and samosa don't fare well sitting out for any length of time.

Cicis pizza buffet sounds OK in concept but obviously you're not getting the best base pie OR toppings and it gets old after a few slices. Plus, you know, part of the buffet attraction is filling up on proteins and that just doesn't work well with pizza.

Buffets generally can be really fun for kids since it's one of the few times THEY get to decide exactly what they want to eat (hopefully not just dessert & sweets).
