the rate at which coffee stales is dependent on, among other things, the surface area of the beans that is exposed to oxygen. When you grind coffee beans you are increasing the surface area exponentially, so you are increasing the rate at which it will go stale by a similar amount.

Never throw away good coffee. Here's a suggestion: How fine did you go with the grind? If it's pour over fine, just power through it. If it's coarser, you can make a cold brew, 1:10 ratio room temp water for 20-24 hours, and leave your container sealed in room-temperature, not the fridge.

there have been some real strides toward making decaf that isn't complete shit among specialty coffee producers in recent years, so if you're lucky and you can find a roaster that cares enough you might be able to find something decent, but decaffeination does inherently change the beans, so there will be flavor differences and it will affect the way you have to grind/brew with them. decaf beans are drier because they've extracted the caffeine using water and/or solvents, and will therefore be less dense than similarly roasted regular beans. Honestly I've had some okay decaf beans from a local place before, but I'd avoid them entirely unless I had a good reason to actually need decaf. I'm one of those fuckers who can down a double espresso and then immediately go to bed with no issue, so I don't consider "wanting coffee at night" a good enough reason for me.

All my family is exactly this, after so many times going to visit and having nothing but dogshit pod coffee available I'm finally gonna just buy a halfway decent hand grinder and take that and my aeropress with me next time I go, I can't do this shit anymore. I feel bad because every once in a while they'll have something new and exciting to them they want me to try, and it's always just some overpriced pods they bought somewhere on vacation that taste exactly like the shit they normally get. What's the point of the Fellow Prismo and similar valve attachments for the Aeropress? From what i can tell, it doesn't actually produce a significant increase in pressure (certainly not to the point where you can brew real espresso). And you can avoid drips during the steep process by just brewing inverted (at the expense of a tiny bit of capacity), or by placing the plunger on top (at the expense of a few at the start drips while the pressure normalises). And even if you do value these QoL features, it costs almost as much as the Aeropress itself so I'm not sure why anyone would spend essentially double the money on what seems like a completely marginal gain.

Although I guess at least this one comes with a metal filter too, the official flow control cap from Aeropress isn't much cheaper and doesn't even come with that.

The average person buying things like this don't have any idea what goes into making actual espresso and just believes whatever the marketing says. Remember that there are people in this world who will spend hundreds of dollars on an espresso machine and then use a pressurized basket because they can't be bothered to get a grinder.

how bullshit is it that you can taste great differences between to coffees just by them being ground by two different grinders that are above 100 USD.

For example, i saw a video and some posts of people saying that the Kingrinder K4 and K6 are super different and that they provide and exacerbate different notes on coffee.

I can believe it when people say that a comandante is better than a kingrinder, there must be a reason why it is 300 USD, but still, how much of it is bullshit?

That is mostly not how it works. If you want to compete, you'll most likely have a variety of roasters to source from. You'll try different beans and batches until you decide on a bean from a roaster. Then you work with the roaster to min-max those beans. My buddy had his own harvest-batch from his chosen bean reserved for him. Then you'll compete with that coffee.
If the harvest of your chosen bean was big enough, people can buy it. Afaik most beans are not the real batch someone went to competition with but other batches.

Honest advice? Look for competitions and try to get in touch with the winners ASAP. Highest chance to get that rewardwinning coffee. Brewing it like one of the winners is another task....

You're paying for fit and finish on the more "premium" hand grinders. Fit and finish in this case just happens to be alignment and how well the burrs are cut and polished, which matter in the cup. Kingrinder k6 might be a bigger clone of the comandante burr, but the comandante burrs are way sharper.
https://youtu.be/BAbbmzyRC3s
>Kingrinder K4 and K6
K4 is a clone of an italian espresso burrset. 6 big "prebreakers" and a short amount of finishing teeth. They deliberately produce more fines for high body high texture traditional italian espresso. That super thick crema you see on top of straight shots? Microfines trapped in co2. Higher body/"cloudiness" in filter coffee? Microfines that have made their way through the paper into your cup. K6/Comandante burrs on the other hand are tuned a little differently. They have an extra set of "prebreakers" and the finishing teeth start way higher up. Gives the coffee a slower feed rate and a longer grinding path to even out so you get a bit less fines. Lower bodied, but you basically "uncloud" your brews. Higher clarity, better flavor separation. More "focus" on the individual notes when they're not as blendy. Theres a chinglish picture with those burrs here so you can see the 6 prebreakers vs 7.

I didn't write how the entire chat went, but it was surreal.

I wrote all the relevant info in my first messages, included the model and capacity of the kettle, and the first reply I got asked me to specify the exact model because they have many kettles (wtf there's ONE stovetop buono with 1 liter capacity), then after minutes the woman in the chat told me that every instruction booklet is the same and she had to ask her colleagues becasue she didn't know what to say, so I left the email to be contacted with further assitance messages.

This morning they told me to wait because they're investigating a fucking simple question.

I'm tempted to go on the japanese hario website and ask them directly using google translate.

Also, not that it's a problem because I still washed and conditioned the kettle, I can sent it back to Amazon in the next 30 days if it's defective, but shit like this makes me both mad and sad and the fun fact is that we brought (read: boomers) to urselves.

I don’t know if it’s faulty or if it’s supposed to be like that.
Either way the kettle is perfect, if there’s something wrong it’s the lid which is a touch smaller than the hole.

What I think it happened is that MAYBE there’s one lid that is shared between the 1 liter and 1.2 liters models, with the latter kettle being narrower at the top, so it fits the 1.2 liters model (still loosely) but it’s a touch smaller for the 1 liter bigger opening.

This 7 year old video shows the lid being loose on the 1.2 liter.

https://youtu.be/UlAMiGX7HRo?feature=shared

Here the 1 liter is being shown when lifting the lid and it’s simply resting on top of the hole, it’s not fixed in place.

https://youtu.be/law7rXWGS64

I tried inclining the kettle and the lid comes partially off when it’s inclined at 90 degrees down, so it will never happen when pouring but it can happen when emptying the kettle in the sink after you’re done, so always keep one hand on the lid or just remove it before doing so.

If you go back to the tasting box page it’s explained that each of them contains a selection of coffee for a specific combination of things (there’s a test you can make to get the recommended box for your choices) such as desired caffeine content, pairing with milk or drink straight and extraction method.
Being an Italian roaster the box 6 with robusta is meant to recreate the Italian cappuccino stronger profile, but it’s a suggestion.

They’re one of the best classic Italian roasters (yes they’re up there with Torrefazione Penazzi) so forget third wave coffee, and they use high quality robusta such as:

>This specialty coffee was introduced in 1993 and is the washed Robusta equivalent of Mysore Nuggets Extra Bold. >The Coffee Board developed Kaapi Royale by re-grading Washed Robusta Parchment-AB and separating out the beans sized 17-screen and larger.
>This grade tolerates no defects. Because the beans are uniform in size, they roast very evenly, providing the softest cup of all Robusta coffees in the world.
>As one of the highest quality Robustas on the market, Kaapi Royale is well suited for inclusion in an espresso blend.

Basically it’s a fine robusta like >>20069027 and yes you need to find the right grind size because it makes a huge difference between chocolate and wood/tobacco + acidity + light chocolate, I was shocked when I tried mine.

The darker the roast the less aromas and clarity are there but you gain in intensity and body, so more chocolate, caramel, nutty and toasted notes.

Light roasts are acidic and floral/fruity, they are hard as fuck to grind properly and extract, you need a meticulous puck prep and temperature control otherwise they’ll taste like shit, that’s why hipsters love them, because spending tons of money to show other coffee “enthusiasts” how good they are gives them serotonine boosts.

Meanwhile true enthusiasts spend $20~$100 for a moka pot and enjoy medium to dark roasts without making a fuss and faggy instagram/youtube shorts with classical music in the background.
