What are some chains or local places that closed or went bankrupt that you miss a lot and why?

There was a local chicken place near me that had the best southern style chicken, they ended up closing because a kfc opened next to it and ruined their business. Also Bennigans breakfast.

Lost a local buffet that was just the best to COVID. Had a salad bar that was the best I've ever had, plus a hot dish and dessert bar plus ice cream. Cheap too, and had a nice outdoor view on top of it. It was the whole package.

Lost several soup and salad places that were decent.

Lost quite a few sandwich places.

Lost plenty of bbq places. This doesn't hurt anymore now that I know how to smoke.

Here's one for the Hawkeyes. There was a cheap Chinese place in downtown Iowa City called Easyplace. Loved their sweet and sour chicken.

In the depths of Rio de Janeiro, Paraty, where none but traficantes used to roam there was one man who wanted it different. The pesky endeavours of trading cocaine for money would maybe be enough for his body, but the hunger of his soul was unquenchable. He dreamt big. His name was Renato

He set out to create a simple, humble yet well crafted burger. He opened a small stall: hamburgeria do renato (renato's burgerhouse)

His specialty? Herb-mayo with a hidden recipe. Glorious. Slightly spicy, deliciously savory, perfect texture. Every burger would come with it, and a small extra for you to dip your fries.

It wasn't long before the local traficantes saw Renato's business. The high quality delicious food was single-handedly curing the addiction of the local populace. Crack-cocaine was at an all time low demand, and Renato was racking in the fruits of his hard labor.

They couldn't leave him alone.
On a rainy brazilian night, they did the unthinkable. They destroyed his business overnight. Renato was never again seen. Some say he had loyal clients among the malandros, and was left loose and ran to Paraguay. Some say he got the microwave treatment. Some speculate Renato was actually another kingpin himself. I do not think so.

And that was the end of Renato. His burger joint? Gone. Nothing remains. His old house was demolished and turned into a chicken coop for his neighbor.
Some say the eggs those chicken make can be turned into an insanely good herb mayo sauce. I wouldn't be surprised.

Farewell, Renato, sua lenda.
Let this be Renato's tale. A man who wanted best for his community.
Hoje choro de tristeza.

There used to be a pho restaurant in Redmond named "Saigon City". I used to go there a couple of times a week for the years when I was working in that area.

The owners were a Vietnamese couple who had escaped from Vietnam after the communists took over. The husband was apparently in the South Vietnamese Army and was stuck in a "reeducation camp" for years after the collapse of the old government. He was the chef and was always there every day; his wife worked at one of the big corporations out there and helped on weekends. And their sons were usually around in the evenings for waitering. A couple of times their daughter came in and waitressed, and holy waooowww was she hot.

Anyway, I got to be friends with the father, and missed him a lot when I lost my career in the dot.com collapse and I had to move out of Seattle. I visited Seattle a few years later and showed him my business card from where I'd ended up (outside the U.S.), and he tacked it to his wall of cards.

The next time I tried to go back, the place was gone. I miss them. They were great people. I hope they're all doing well.
