They do it precisely BECAUSE nobody knows what the fuck the trading ratio is between calories and kj, meaning they can fulfill their legal obligations to display nutrients without actually disclosing to the average customer how healthy or unhealthy the food is. I'm from europe, I'm steeped in the metric system, and we never use only kj. At best we display both kj and cal side by side, but kj is mostly used for industrial applications not food.

How else would less than 1kg of food be able to sustain our 80-100kg bodies? Just think about what complex energetic things we do with that little mass of ingested substance.

You can see how much the energy in temperature would actually be in mechanical effects -Every 120ml of water you heat by one degree K/C in energy equal a gunshot.
In other words, if you could actually extract and manipulate the energy in filet o fish by your will and concentrate it where you want you could do unimaginable mechanical things, moving tons of weights or popping heads like overripe fruit.
But we are lucky that it is so incredibly energy dense, only because of that we are able to live with such small amounts of food in the first place.
