20363353 No.20363353 [Reply] [Original]

I've been trying to pick out different brands of beer and seeing which ticks for me, but most of them taste like shit. Is beer supposed to taste this bad? Do I need to make an attempt to "taste" the flavor of the beer depending on which I pick out? Do I need to keep drinking until I get attuned to alcohol or do I just have bad taste buds?

I was the same way in my beer journey. Eventually I found a few beers I liked. If you dislike the "beer" flavor more beers have, might I recommend Miller High Life? I think it's mild and refreshing, the beer for someone who doesn't like most beer. I've also become fond of Mickey's malt liquor. I appreciate the occasional Guinness.

Those aside, I've also enjoyed Blue Moon and a few of its offshoots, Dos Equis, Modelo and some of Sam Adams offerings.

Most of those are shitty beers, Guinness being the exception, and Budweiser is passable.
Go to a bar or restaurant and drink whatever they have on tap. Beer tastes much better when it comes from a keg instead of a bottle or can.
Also try some wheat beers, they’re my favorite and have a much different taste than the pilsners or lagers you’ve tried. Weihenstephaner is my favorite, I find it on tap fairly often and most liquor stores have it in my small Indiana city so it’s not that uncommon.

Focus on trying different styles rather than brands. Try weissbier, IPA, stouts, porters, schwarzbier, branch out into mead, cider etc.
Don't bother with normiefaggot brands, they are all diluted flavorless slop.
You'll be shocked by how watery Guinness is compared to a real stout. Buy craft or on tap, check out stuff from your local breweries.

I’d suggest going to a Total Wine or a Whole Foods or wherever and getting a build your own 6pk, while drinking each beer type up your thoughts in a google doc and give it a rating. Try this with as many beers as possible over the next few months, and in your head you’ll be able to be like okay Tecate tastes a bit better than Corona Extra, or Miller High Life tastes a bit better than PBR, and so on. This is basically what I did when I got bored with slamming 12pks of Busch Ice every weekend for ages, it really helped to show me what actually good beer is.

I've had bud twice. Once when it was being give out as a cheap sample for a new "premium" version, and the second, years later knocking back a few lights with friends. Truth be told, the premium was wprse. It had the promise of being a nice beer with toasty malt, but it fell flat then left an unpleasant aftertaste. The light shit was hardly recognizable as something other than straw coloured water, so it was less offensive than I'd expected.

Yeah, I'm aware of the adjuncts. I thought it was corn though, or maybe they change that based on what ever is cheaper. But I'm pretty sure some portion of it does have to be barley for it to be advertised as beer, what percentage that is is up in the air though. But it was the aftertaste, of the so called premium, that put me off so much.

When trying to figure out what types of beers you might enjoy, don't filter by brand names.
Google what the different styles of beer are and try one or two random beers of that style.
When you try a beer, remember (or jot down notes somewhere) what it was and try to describe what you liked and disliked about it.
Presuming you don't have any knowledgeable friends on the subject, after you've got a little bit of understanding of what flavors or things you think you like and don't like, you can just go to a beer shop and ask for advice.

You should try something other then Pilsner or Lager. They do indeed taste very similar. If you don't have much experience its natural they you feel that way.
For example, to me all the wines taste same, like all reds or all whites taste like each other but I know that its because I rarely drink wine. Same I can say for hard liquors, unless they are flavoured with non essential ingredients I wouldn't be able to pinpoint the difference easily.

I would start with Belgian beers if they are avaible in your country. Then move on to different type of beers across different brands. There is absolutely a difference between beers. But it comes down to psychology a lot. If you don't like beer it would be probably hard for you to understand that difference, which is true for all other food and even all other hobbies.
One can say a fried chicken is a fried chicken no matter what, but when it comes to KFC, Popeyes, Chick-fil-A there is absolutely a difference, very subtle but also very huge in the same time.
