Can we have a favorite Jewish food thread?

I miss helzl/kishke/stuffed derma; there used to be a Russian market that made it near where I grew up. They stopped doing prepared foods like that years ago.

Also I miss chopped liver; I think I'm the only person left alive under 50 who likes the stuff.

Does /ck/ like any old country Jewish foods?

Matzo bread is fucking great, never thought I'd like it.

Chocolate covered matzo bread is god-tier as well.

I felt the same way about matzo ball soup. Had a Jewish friend growing up who said it was the worst thing ever, but when my Jewish roommate at college gave me some to try, I thought it was pretty amazing.

Jewish food can be quite good, but it's always seemed to me that there are a ton of lousy Jewish cooks, thus leading to its reputation as a boring cuisine.

Yeah, Jewish delis are picky, but good.

I was at my Step-Uncle's Passover, and learned a lot about Jewish culture and had Matzo ball soup as well as matzo bread for the first time. Very nice. I'd eat a bowl every day, no bowl on Saturdays, though.

Next time I'm in New York, I'm buying a pastrami knish from THIS FUCKING RESTAURANT with a Cel-Ray to wash it down.

>>4560535
This is correct. On Shabbos you can only have soup from cups or mugs.

I wonder if the writers did that on purpose.

Also, crap, I spent mpore than a week in New York and didn't go their. I've been craving a good knish for a while.

Ha ha, no, I am uncool and didn't catch the reference.

Maybe you could make a knish at home? I've been meaning to try that, since I live so far from where you can buy them. It may be more work than it's worth.

You should watch The Big Lebowski. It's a funny movie with lots of Jewish references and subtle little jokes.

Eh, probably too much work and I don't have the time/resources. If there are any good Jewish places anywhere in the south, I'd love to hear about them (or any good restaurants, really).

>good Jewish places anywhere in the south

;_;

There's a deli called Mastman's that broke ground in Austin, TX but as they aren't open yet I have no idea if they're any good. Also in Austin is Russian House. I can't vouch for it, but I've heard good things. Not Jewish specifically, but there's overlap. Borscht, at least. There was always Borscht in my house growing up.

This thread is just Ashkenazi as fuck. What are the odds there are Jews from outside Eastern Europe who can talk about what they eat?

why is this a thing? I mean, it looks delicious as any pile of meat would, but it's just stupid. It's insulting to have those meager slices of bread there. It doesn't make any sense at all. May as well have them drop all the meat in a bowl.

Autism in full swing after seeing that. God damnit.

That one IS sort of an extreme example in terms of height, but you'll get it after a while. It helps if you can actually be in presence of the sandwich, and smell its glories. Also, you can ask for extra bread. (Dunno if you can do this in New York, only had limited deli experiences there, but in most other Jewish delis in the US, you can).

I always thought that halva was more of a muslim thing. I know both religions are strong in the middle east, so it is common for things to get mixed up.

None the less, I love a good halva and I'm a nordic descendant of vikings.

Used to go to a place called Mama Batts on 22nd st right by the lake in Chicago with my dad, closed like 30 years ago. It was next door to that place George Rivera ( that was his name then) failed with Capone's empty safe. LMAO.

I loved their kreplach(sp?) soup and i forget what else but it was freaking delish.
