I have been experimenting with asian food lately, particularly with Japanese food. I really like how Bento are made and how colorful and lively the food is so I wanted to try it for myself!

This is my first time making onigiri ever! Can you tell which ones I attempted to fill? :P
I ate two of the small ones and they are surprisingly very filling.
The smaller ones went into my bento box with a taro mochi and a papaya pudding on the bottom compartment.

What are some more recipes I could try? Do you know of any unconventional sushi and onigiri recipes?

Bento box in next post <3

reeally slow ...don't expect an answer today even ...but ya ..this is one I copied for my wife to take to work ...took about an hour an half to make but absolutley worth it..when she called from work to say she loved me and is glad she gets to spend the rest of her life with me ...have to say that makes anything worth the effort to hear that in her voice...go online there are tons of pics and recipes for bento's...

That is adorable!!

One thing I did notice was that the onigiri itself took a long time to make and my bento assortment took longer, totaling about an hour.

What kind of meats should I use if I'm making a bento that's more than just rice balls?

I watched that in the WikiHow for onigiri. I really like those recipes and I plan on trying them. I don't get how the girl can shape it so fast--it takes me forever to make one rice ball because I can't make the triangle right!

I made some once but I was using basmati rice and it turned into a complete mess.

you can use anything that will stay fresh when refrigerated...I just use things that have good color like sliced ham and sliced turkey for skin colors and you can color rice to make it look like fur , omlette eggs make great blankets for a breakfast surprises ...you have to find out wjat things you like to copy and then make them in differants foods to see how they look..youtube has neat vids for this also ...

I used instant rice on my very first attempt and it stuck well when it was hot, but when it cooled it was hard and unappetizing :( Big mistake!

The asian market I went to for the rice sells 5lb bags of it cheaply. When I asked for sticky rice I was given thai medium grain sweet rice. Works excellently!

use white rice and add a little suger , bout a table spoon and don't use to much water ,,use a little less water to make is more sticky..and make sure you hands are not dry ..just a little water on them so the rice does not stick to your skin..and then practice...alot..
these always make people smile when come over for dinner,,,

Should I use less water when making sushi with medium grain sticky rice?

Some asian markets sell onigiri kits with a triangular rice mold and seaweed covers so that when you fold just right, it makes a seaweed and plastic wrap cover with a pull tab opening.

Onigiri tastes better when the whole thing is wrapped in seaweed, particularly flavored seaweed. If you don't want to fill them, you can also use various rice toppings mixed in.

You want to use short grain rice cooked in a rice cooker with a bit of extra water. No minute rice, it won't stick.

I bought a onigiri once from a local japaness store which sell those as takeaway. I had to threw that shit away since I didnt expect the nori to be crunchy and it smelled really strong like dead fish. Since it was complety wrapped in nori I had to threw it away. I was never the fan of stuff out of the ocean beside fried fish so the japanese kitchen is pretty small for me. I really love fried noodles like yakisoba and other fried stuff with soyasauce though.

It's seaweed, of course it smells like ocean.
