Pies are traditionally cut into triangles.

It's a fucking pizza it doesn't matter. The only time it might kinda-sorta matter is when you're entertaining multiple people and basically want to turn a pizza into snacks for guests, rather than a meal.

ROFLCAKES. You factored in planning. For a pizza.

As for cost, when I make pizza the total cost is no more than $2 but TBH it's usually less, I just didn't want to appear to exaggerate by saying 50x cheaper, although that is possible for some anons given the variables.

And incidentally if I fast-proof the dough I can have pizza on the table in just a little over 30 minutes.

It's not as good as dough made well in advance but if you're in a hurry..... Likewise you could make dough in large batches and freeze portions for later use. Single portions could probably thaw enough to knead in the time it takes to preheat the oven.

Fuck your retarded math.

Buying enough cheese to top a pizza would cost well over $2. And if you're buying ingredients in bulk, your cost per pizza might be that low, but then you might as well be in the pizza business. I pay the extra $6 so someone else can make me a medium pizza because I spend 8 hours a day working so that I don't have to go home and work more to eat.

If you enjoy cooking and it's pleasurable for you to make your own pizza and then eat it, that's great. If you're making your own pizzas because it saves you money and your touting the cost as a benefit to making your own pizzas, you're going about it all wrong.

Regular supermarket staples here. Cost may be lower than it is for you but it's by no means as cheap as you can find stuff in the many parts of the US I assure you. Or the UK for that matter. I'll break it down, leaving the dough to last since it uses the obvious bulk ingredient.

A medium sized jar of olives is currently €0.45 here IIRC. I'd normally use between 1/4 and 1/2 the jar.

If I use mozz it's 49c a packet, cheese would be quite a bit less than this if I use edam, gouda or emmental with a little bit of cheddar.

All the ingredients for the tomato sauce can't come to more than 20c: couple of spoons of tomato paste, salt, pepper, little olive oil, herbs, splash of water (or olive brine). The olive oil is extra virgin but even if I were spending like $12 a bottle (I'm not) the recipe only requires ~1tbsp so no problem.

One onion, that's about 7c. Some slices of salami, maybe 20c. That's me sorted for toppings.

So running tot, assuming half the olives and the more expensive cheese option that leaves 81c for the dough. Not using 00 flour who can't manage that?

I buy flour in 2 kilo bags, I'd get at least 6-8 pizza doughs per bag so roughly 20c for the flour at current prices.

That leaves 61c for all the other dough ingredients which is obviously not a problem. The small amount of sugar & salt needed are nearly free but let's call it 5c just for S&G. So that leaves the yeast.

Yeast is 99c a box here, 8 sachets to the box, half a sachet needed at max (if you make it well in advance you use less as it breeds in the dough). That's a bit over 6c for yeast, maximum.

Total: €1.50 which at today's exchange rate is $1.97.

So I'd say that was a pretty good estimate :-)

Roman pizza (pizza al taglio/pizza is a long rectangle and cut along the width with scissors into rectangular shape and sold by weight or length (which measure is used varies shop to shop), otherwise, pizze aren't generally made large enough in Italy where cutting it into slices for proper serving sizes is necessary. A large pizza in Italy is roughly 30cm in diametre and costs about €5: that's about a foot US wide for $7.
The only larger pizza is "shovel pizza," which is oval-shaped. This is cut into triangles, wedges or rectangles. It's not uncommon to see such a pizza cut as >>4771911.

Okay, so say I want to make a tiny-ass thinly-covered pizza with the shittiest least-fresh ingredients I can buy, like 4772884's for comparison, with toppings chosen for cheapness instead of what I'd actually want.

3 oz. (0.8 kg/half can) pitted black olives $1.12
0.3 lb (4.8 oz./0.14 kg) shredded italian cheese, $2.37
0.3 lb (4.8 oz./0.14 kg) onion, $0.21
2 tbsp tomato paste (for a whole pizza, srsly?) $0.20
1 tbsp olive oil $0.11
0.25 lb (4 oz./0.11 kg) hard salami $2.12

So ignoring dough, that's already $6.13 (€4.63). Maybe my meat and cheese quantities are off, or maybe they're radically more expensive in the US than in the most expensive region of Europe, or maybe you're talking about much smaller amounts than in a typical American pizza.

Pic related: a typical $5 (€3.78) large pepperoni pizza (14"/35cm diameter) from a shittiest-tier pizzeria.

Last night's budget pizza.

I weighed the flour this time instead of just eyeballing as I usually do, used exactly 250g. That's 1/8 of a bag and there's a little too much dough for the skillet, so I think I'd get 10 per bag with the normal amount, not 6-8.

This didn't use mozz, so the cost of the cheese was lower than in the calculation.

With all the other over-estimations I can honestly state this cost significantly less than two bucks.

The pizza I posted is not a third the size of the one in 4773301 FFS.

It's enough to serve 2.

Perfectly clear you'll continue to believe what you want to believe so expect you'll dismiss this out of hand but think about the average height of the sides on a cast iron skillet..... now look at the pic again....... Right about now you'll want to revise your determination of "less substantive".

My pizza was 9" across, over an inch thick. The hell it's 1/3 of the size of the one you posted.

Now since you went full retard and went into detail...

>less cheese
I've seen exactly how much cheese is spread on a typical pizza, there isn't less on mine: four slices of gouda (for the record CHEAPER than the mozz priced for above, less than half a €0.74 pack)

>less sauce
The hell there is. You can't see it because it's covered by the cheese ya fool!

>less meat
It's not lowest-tier pepperoni for a start, but instead quality Hungarian-style smoked salami. You don't slice that paper-thin like they do for takeout pizza, it would burn to a cinder.

And wow, look how you avoided factoring in the olives completely. Whole olives too, not halved, and there are 13 olives in the photo, originally 14 on the pie. That's 28 pieces of olive on a takeout pizza IF they even use halves, when we all know that plenty of places use rings.

Ok, I was estimating 8" instead of 9". Using area = pi*radius squared, yours is 64" (3.14*4.5*4.5) vs 154" (3.14*7*7), so yours is 40% the size of the $5 pizzeria pie. Make it the same size, and your $2 pie would cost $5.

I ignored height since yours is just dough. Sauce you said you use just two tablespoons of tomato per pizza. Already priced other stuff out, with quantities, and have nothing else to add. The biggest cost difference seems to be that cheese in the most expensive part of Europe is a fraction of the cost of cheese in the cheapest parts of the US, and that's the most expensive ingredient for many pizzas here.

many reasons
1. people dont want to hold on to fucking loose melty cheesy and get their hands all fucking greasy
2. when you cut them into boxes you end up eating all the pieces with crust at the end first and then you are left with just the middle parts that fucking suck
3. it is so much easier to cut a pizza into triangles than boxes, considering the fact that a pizza is FUCKING ROUND to begin with
4. every delivery place that serves box cut pizzas almost always sucks dick and therefore most people will subconsciously assume that box cut tastes bad regardless of actual quality

also on the subject of new york, i hate new yorkers who say pizza in new york is better because they have better water, as though their water is somehow so radically different it makes better dough. and as though it doesn't matter that they get every other fucking ingredient that makes the pizza from other states. the only reason pizza in new york is better than other states is because there are more fucking pizza places there so of course a few are going to end up being the best in the U.S.

Yep, triangles. In southern rural France, where juvenile rabbits and field rats are popular toppings, they'll precut the pizza to make meat carving easier without having to cut underneath the meat.
