Why don't Americans eat more insects /ck/?

. High in protein and some in fat
. Easy to catch
. Crispy when cooked
. No added growth hormones
. Not factory farmed
. Helps curb their overpopulation
. A delicacy in most parts of the world
. Not really too different from crustaceans like lobsters and crabs

So, tell me /ck/, why don't Americans eat more insects? Why don't you?

>why don't Americans eat more insects?

>Why don't you?

General squeamishness and fear of looking abnormal, I presume.

>Why don't you?

Vegetarian. Nuff said.

>> No.4882206

it wasn't a practice imported to the white people of america.
it's not looked on favourably because insects are seen as dirty or gross.
they aren't, but its a stigma that persists.

I might if there was a place that cooked them.

so were lobsters and goose livers 200 years ago

>> No.4882223

>>4882216
then it's entirly possible for the stigma to be changed and america to enjoy insects. which would be great.

Grow a fucking pair. I eat them all of the time. My favorite are hornworms that infest tomato plants.

>cultural aversion from centuries of not bug-eating

Personally I like to eat bugs, but I stay away from larvae because it weirds me out (muh feels) to eat a juvenile animal, so no mealworms or silkworms

>> No.4882794

>>4882746
i have an abundance of those yearly. they surely have quite a bit of nutrients and protein. i use them to catch fish, but might try fried hornworm first, because you know everything is better friend, them maybe just hornworm on a stick.
but, yeah.

They are great for bearded dragons as well. But yes they do taste very good. Try a stir fry skip the meat and use those. Get them good and crisp, also cut off the head, the little bits can get stuck in your teeth.

Too many of these threads are directed at Americans. If you're so interested in us you don't need to be coy about it by calling us out on food habits to start a conversation. How about we talk about what we should make you for breakfast in bed instead?

It has to do with crop spraying.
Especially in parts of the world that still use DDT and 245D.
The poisoning whilst wiping out target insects of crops, are also absorbed by "friendly" species (French scientists believe there could be a link between bee decrease and nicotine pesticides for example) that are multi generational residual poisons.
A perfect example of this is the Bogong Moth in SE Australia which was a nutrient bomb for aboriginals being 50% fat and 25% protein it was more nutritious than some nuts.
However due to tomato and tobacco farming in the area the moths are pretty much deemed inedible due to the health risks.
So for domestic consumption insects would have to be farmed, after being sourced from pristine untouched wilderness "national parks" and studies undertaken to try and estimate broods migratory patterns.

Insects are basically environmental canaries down coal mines. They're the first to consume and harbour toxic chemicals which if we took in a similar ratio would kill us.
