My super market coffee of choice is $8 for 340 grams (12 ounces), I can get high quality Indian black tea leaves at $8 for 200g.
So I can get ~571 ounces of decent quality tea for $8 or ~191 ounces of super market coffee for $8

Appropriate temperature is about 90-95 degrees celsius for black tea and about 75-80 degrees celsius for green tea. If you start using loose leaves, make sure you steep them in a vessel that leaves them room to expand and use a strainer of some sort to remove leaves.

This is tangentially related.

I work in a coffee shop. You would be fucking amazed how little actual coffee is sold at a coffee shop. My job literally consists of chores, preparing baked shit (loaded with calories), and steaming milk.

Maybe four times in an hour does someone order a black coffee. Every single other person orders some bullshit that is loaded with sugar and milk. Pro-tip; the longer the name of the drink, the more calories. And don't get me started on people who order some ridiculous shit loaded with calories and then specify that they would like nonfat milk used.

Don't get me wrong, I like food, but I watch what I eat because my body is important to me. You fuckers are buying just cups full of coffee flavored hot ice cream.

From a coffee-shop guy concerned about your health: order a black coffee.

Also, yes, we judge the fuck out of you. I make fun of fat people who order breve to my coworkers.

There are coffee shops and there are "coffee shops"

Real coffee shops serve espresso as a mainstay to hard core coffee drinkers, and will make lattes, macchiati, and cappuccini or single cup black coffee if requested. They usually have a few cookies or similar too. The clientele is quiet, respectful, and tastefully dressed.

"Coffee shops" have a huge bakery and pastry cabinet, and their mainstays are blended drinks which may or may not contain coffee, $4 bottled water, and coffee beverages containing mostly sugar syrup. Lately they've begun serving things like 'white tea" and "matcha lattes" too. The clientele usually involves a lot of strollers, fatties, and uggos wearing tacky exercise clothes despite their owners never having broken a sweat.

>>Tea.

Coffee is the drug of capitalism.

Coffee represents the old outdated system we're in --- bitter and muddy. It looks like something out of the oil tycoon days or something that falls out of a car.

Man, i'm really bleak on view for coffee right now.... might be because of the tea ignorant society i'm in here in the states. People here demand tea the same way they desire coffee..... black tea which is the most caffeinated.

I prefer tea because of the aroma. A nice cup of Rooibos red tea is such an elegant delicate essence of Earth at its most simplistic form in a cup of steaming water. Drinking tea is about inner peace, the feeling is comparable to sitting in a Jacuzzi as the calming warmth washes away my anxiety, fear and doubts. You realize why we ditched tea for coffee here in the states? Because tea was a capitalist financial instrument wielded by the corrupt British Parliament and East India Company's Tax Act over which we had no say. Saying "fuck you" to tea on a cold December evening in Boston Harbor in 1773 was a turning point in our country's very foundation. Do you think that tea from dust is the same as tea from orange pekoe? Have you even had tea that didn't come from a bag before?

>> No.4965544

What point is there in making such a binary choice?

I drink both. I like coffee in the mornings because of the whole roasty toasty goodness of it and on a few occasions in the afternoon if the weather is rough, I have work to do, or I want to relax after having a dinner out.

I drink tea when i'm not drinking coffee or just when I want that more.

Tea.

Coffee is awful.

I like all three hot drinks (coffee, tea, hot chocolate).

HOWEVER, the only one I care about the nuances of is coffee. I'm fine with PG Tips and Swiss Miss until I die, but I go out of my way to get quality coffee beans.

I did go through a phase where I bought quality tea from places like Harney & Sons, and to be honest, the difference between that and tea bags wasn't so great that I felt the need to pay so much more. Again, this is all my opinion. I can see that tea can be crazy varied and nuanced.

The crap people buy in those giant jugs such as Arizona Tea is essentially coolaid. Nothing but sugar and some "natural flavored tea" which pretty much means artificially synthetic flavor enhancers. They won't know the difference either way. Most people only know of Green & Black tea, anything else is new to them so it won't be hard to convince them.

With companies such as Teavana (bought out by Starbucks and now opening up Tea bars) they're going to pretty much redefine the definition of tea.

People don't want to have to constantly define the thousands of plants into different categories. They just want to say "i'm gonna get some tea want to come with?"

No one wants to say "i'm going to Teavana to buy some Tea and some other herbal based tea-like drinks hururururur".

Well no one wants to say "I'm going for some camellia sinensis beverage, want to come?" either. I have a solution to this dilemma.

How about instead of separating Tea and Tisane, why not just first call out the name of the plant then following up with Tea. For example---

Camellia Black Tea
Camellia Oolong Tea
Camellia Green Tea
Camellia White Tea

Rooibos Tea
Honeybush Tea
Jasmine Tea
Tulsi Tea
Etc.

here's a suggestion

go find a mint plant, lemon verbena, lemongrass, oxalis, or (the easiest to distinguish of them all) a pine tree, and harvest some leaves or needles, steep them in boiling water for a few minutes and drink.

these are all alternatives to camellia and they all have health benefits, probably more than traditional tea will ever have.

doing this will teach you how to identify a few different plants and will give you the satisfaction of taking nature and turning it into something useful. just be weary not to harvest anything near highways or high polluted areas

Almost all tea drinkers add milk and or sugar to it, because it otherwise is too bland or astringent to be drinkable.

Fresh Formosa oolong from the higher elevations of certain mountains in Taiwan is what smells like perfume and tastes like candy. The higher up you go, the more intense the smell and sweeter the tea gets. It has something to do with how the sugars and scent concentrates in the leaves at higher elevations(colder temps, less oxygen, more cloud cover ect). When I am in San Francisco's Chinatown I get these Formosa teas at the Red Blossom tea company (like many good tea shops, you can order their tea online). You want to look at the late winter early spring oolongs from Alishan or Lishan. That is when they taste the best, but you have to make sure you buy this stuff closer to the time it was picked in a season. So if it is spring, you want to get tea that was picked in late winter early spring.
Here is a link if you want to give this stuff a look. These are the teas which blew my mind when I first discovered them. BTW, don't get scared about the prices. I buy 50-100 bucks worth of this stuff a year and can barely get through it. lol
http://www.redblossomtea.com/tea/oolong/formosa.html

Gold thread is what tastes and smells like honey. You can also get it from places like Red Blossom btw. It is a pretty normal black tea, but its got these neat honey flavors and scents. I like it because you don't lose that nice black tea flavor you want sometimes.

The chocolate smelling/tasting tea...It was named black dragon pearls or something like that. I just discovered it today and was VERY impressed with it. The loose leaf tea is formed into these tightly packed balls. Each ball is made up of around 30 leaves. Toss several of these balls into some hot water and boom. You've got something special.

the absolute best place to buy loose leaf teas is from an immigrant tea import shop, where multiple harvests are stacked high on shelves and you can go in and sample them.

online is the next best.

then maybe a bulk dry goods store, they'll probably have common teas like assam and darjeeling at least.

absolute worst is hipster tea bars, full of candy-like blends designed to compete with starbucks' most outrageous lattes.

I wish teabars would become as popular as coffee shops. Here in the states there's only a small handful of tea shops in any given area which makes me sad. It sucks how a company such as Teavana is leading the way with their super sugar flavor tea..... but.... I kinda feel that it's necessary to get more people to drink tea, especially loose tea. Most people use teabags which is pretty much the left over powder from the barrels sold at a high price with poor quality. I want a place where I can socialize and try out new varieties, but that's usually reserved for coffee shops such as Starbucks. But this is where it gets interesting anon, just watch this video.
