What's so bad about British food? Can someone give some examples of notably bad British dishes?
I already know about black pudding, but other than that, it seems more just bland than actually disgusting.

Whoa!!! Why dont you name some good ones instead?

>> No.5335386

black pudding is weaksauce compared to german sausages, get over it

most of our cuisine is convenience based and post-war stuff, we don't grow a lot of our own meat or veg and our climate isn't really desirable to grow anything but root vegetables

that said, "british cuisine" right now could mean basically anything cooked in this country because we're so multicultural

Black pudding.

I was referring more to traditional British cuisine, unless modern British food is what people are referring to when they say that it's so awful.

>>5335389
so like... pies and roasts, i suppose? like i said before, we don't really grow anything and no "exotic food" traded into the wealthier families during the peak of our trading colonies counts towards anything resembling "british" food

there's quite a lot of history in baking here, but it's all more or less about pies at the end of the day

i guess what you're asking for is the worst example of british food, so i suppose Greggs. it's britfag takeout that sells pasties, cakes, and awful sandwiches.

fish and chips, the great national stereotype, was a friday tradition a hundred or so years ago to use up fish that had been fresh on monday but was no longer good enough to eat without being nuked at high heat and doused in salt and vinegar.

>> No.5335537

I maintain it's in the mentality:
- Keep it purely practical
- Chuck in every ingredient in the cupboard and maybe it'll end up ok.

>Christmas pudding/cake
>Dried fruits
>Preserved fruits
>Every existing northern european spice
>Cooked for hours with tons of liquor so it'll last months

>Pies
>Mystery leftover meat
>Any veg that's in the cupboard
>Sealed in a pastry case to keep it "fresh"

(I heard that's actually the origin of pies and originally the crust was thrown away before eating)

There's very little "traditional" British cuisine because for some reason British monarchs never followed suit with the rest of Europe and Asia and got their personal cooks to innovate.

>> No.5336159

Ye olde traditional British food was based around lumps of roasted meat, so it is really as simple as roast beef, or a leg of lamb or pork. Very straightforward stuff really. There's a reason the French call us Rosbifs, for hundreds of years when the rest of Europe was living on bread and scraps the English were famed for eating meat with every meal. It was astounding to a lot of foreign observers, because it was the kind of diet only the rich could afford on the continent. In the 18th century, for example, something like 80% of British households had these very complicated clockwork spits for cooking meat. As a result, while the continentals developed all these interesting methods of preserving and cooking funky bits of food, which led to the fantastic cuisine they have today, we just carried on eating whacking great lumps of meat.

The other aspect of this is that what innovative cuisine that the UK had was completely trashed during and after the war, with a combination of rationing followed by the appearance of supermarkets and processed shit wrecking any traditional cooking skills. After all, for something like 10 years there was only 1 type of bread and 1 type of cheese. Dark times indeed.

With our mild climate I suppose it's impossible to grow anything exotic and tasty even today, so British meals can be overshadowed by countries with interesting ingredients or spices. Pre-1500 when we didn't even have tomatoes, potatoes, corn, etc. meals would have been based entirely around a hunk of meat, a tradition which definitely hasn't gone away.

To enjoy British cuisine you really need to look at it from a different angle - while not the most tasty or interesting, they're designed to be incredibly hearty, cheap, and filling (a trend obviously set in the industrial period). Pies, pasties, soups, stews, and roasts are all easy to make, transport, and eat, and really fill you up (carbs and protein!) Pic related - some Welsh cawl (stew), delicious.

Also we excel much more in desserts. Cakes and biscuits are big here.

It is simple. Amerifats have unrefined immature tastes and crave sweets, potato crisps and pizza like little pesky brats. Their habits in eating proper food on a table are lacking. To appreciate traditional food, one has either live in the culture or be able to suppress their primitive urges (high will and control) to eat only what's familiar. There are well raised children who eat cauliflower and porridge, and there're amero kidalts, who still drink sugary fizzy drinks over the age of 15.

Traditional British food is actually pretty good.

>> No.5339737

>>5335371

British food is interesting because of it's semi-ancient ancient nature, its parenthood and resemblance to many Western dishes, and its overall lack of spices and other attraction.

Some foods are interestingly tasty, others surprisingly spicy, acid, or even acrid. Some bear resemblance to genitalia, explore taboo concepts, or remind blood wars, feuds, and losses.

As far as I know, only monk food, Asian or Christian, is known to be so bland. Socially, this probably had the effect that food tok second place to conversation at the table, food was not an end unto itself, it was not something sought, or hyped, and "good British food" is food that was well-prepared, rather than food that is tasty. Which, in theory, can largely affect perception of substance, over frivolous things.

This might be derived from the incessant feud with and desire to distinguish from the French, who enjoy the frivolous and the shocking. Between 1500 and 1900, the British actually contributed largely to science, but with industrialization, this somehow ended. The Brits are actually terrible scientists because they are so tongue-in-cheek, bitter, and seek personal expression in an area where there shouldn't be any.

I am not sure how the British collapse of reality occurred.

On the west coast of the US healthy living is very popular. Most of the people I know live mostly on fresh fruits and vegetables but what we DO have are spices and herbs that add flavor to our food. Telling us we have immature palates when almost every dish on here is the same tan, fried, bread color is so ridiculous I don't know what to say. It all looks so fucking bland. I appreciate flavor.

>> No.5339851

>>5339737

So much wrong in one post, where to even begin...

British food does not have some bizarre symbolism, any blandness is a product of the blandness that arises in most Northern cuisines, due to a lack of locally grown strong flavours. Traditional British food is just very meat heavy, as the country has some of the best grazing pasture you can get, so people just ate roast meats. Food was no more or less of an 'event' than in any other culture. A lot of traditional British dishes were forgotten in the 20th century when everybody took to eating tinned food. As a final aside on the food topic, the French were probably the biggest influence on British food, people weren't eating bland food to somehow get back at the French, what unfathomable bullshit.

As for science, some 20th century British discoveries and inventions:

The structure of the atom
Half-lives, alpha and beta radiation
Vacuum cleaner
Fingerprinting
Valve electronics
Isotopes
Vitamins
Reconstructive surgery
Aircraft carrier
X-rays
Mass spectrograph
Cure for typhoid
Insulin
Long range radio
Television
Antibiotics
Jet engine
Nerve impulses
Splitting of the atom
Neutrons
Radar
The computer
Keyhole surgery
DNA
Link between lung cancer and smoking
Hovercraft
Hip replacement
Radio telescope
VTOL aircraft
Higgs boson
Beta blockers
Birth control pill
Portable defibrillator
CT scanning
Concorde
DNA matching
html
Solution to Fermat's last theorem
Graphene

That's just a fairly quick list, there are more, and science is pretty international now. The problem is that science is underfunded in the UK, so we don't develop enough patents on our discoveries.

Those scones went nicely with the lemon curd. No clotted cream available so I had to use normal "cream" ("Schmand" in German).

Yes, some of the British cuisine is absolutely disgusting, but some of the sweet stuff and the food you use for tea time is superb.

I'm from continental Europe, Germany to be precise, and the stereotype that British food is bad pisses me the fuck off. I can't find any variety of quality Cheddar anywhere near. It's even difficult to order it over the internet.

I bet there's loads of other stuff I would really like but I can't get any of it comfortably.

I'll have to make a travel tour through Britain to experience the cuisine. I'm not bullshitting either. Everything I've had so far that was British food was fucking awesome. Shepherd's pie is amazing for example.

Then again we Germans don't have the best reputation concerning food either. So maybe that's why I like British food. The stereotype is very alive and strong here though, which makes no sense if you ask me.

This may be true compared to what many Indians actually eat, because that's spicy as absolute fuck. I've heard that British Indian food is actually quite spicy and that you guys like it that way though. Apparently it is/was kind of a drunk lad idiocy thing, lol.

yeah spicy curries are a lad thing here, the ladies stereotypically get korma, tikka masala or whatever.

brit curries are great but menus are generally not particularly fresh or diverse.

i eat at ed miliband's favourite curry place and i get the 'naga' which is supposed to be the hottest thing on the menu but it's not that bad and has a real depth of chilli flavour.

Cultural snobbery. Britain's different enough to be different but not to get the free pass of 'exotic'.
