Hey /ck/, let's get a thread going for cocktails/mixed drinks. I've been going through loads lately, since I'm on holiday in Bologna and their "aperitivo" seems holy.

My favourites so far are the "pre-dinner" cocktails, like negronies, dry martinis, americanos, etc. The Negroni is an amazing drink, although I prefer the Negroni Sbagliato. What are your favourites?

>> No.5568847

only a huge fggt would consume a cock-tail, real men drink beer and whiskey.

negroni is an excellent choice. I personally like gin and whiskey, so normally go for Martini, Manhattan or Old Fashioned. Its a shame its always so expensive to get a decent cocktail though

White Russians, Cuba Libres, and Jack and Cokes are my go-to mixed drinks. Also, ginger ale mixed with just about anything.

I like to make my own cocktails at home.

I have a nice simple G&T recipe that I like a lot; other people have tried it say it's a "love/hate" kind of thing.
>1-2 shots gin
>2-3 shots tonic
>(Literally) 3 grains of salt
>A mint leaf or 2
>A couple lemon (or lime) wedges
>Muddle the mint, salt and 1 shot of tonic together until somewhat pasty
>Add rest of tonic and mix; then add gin and mix
>Squeeze a lemon or lime wedge onto the top; either place the wedge in the drink as well or throw it away
>Best served in a cold glass or with ice

Also if you made simple cinnamon syrup (1c water, 1c sugar, 1-2tblsp ground cinnamon or 1 stick cinnamon) you can make another simple drink. A cinnamon screwdriver.
>1 shot vodka
>1-2 shots syrup
>Rest of the glass with OJ
>Mix and serve cold or room temp
>Bonus: if you know how to layer a drink, get a shooter-shotglass, put 1/2shot of syrup in glass; fill with OJ; leave enough room for 1 or 1-1/2shots vodka; make sure to layer it so it looks nice; drink up

Solid choices, respectable drinks for adult palettes, classic cocktails. I approve.

>>5568876

Spirits plus a mixer of soda or milk, children's booze made oversweet to hide the alcohol, no subtlety. Not really cocktails. I disapprove.

>he doesn't understand that a Cuba Libre is a rum and lime with coke, not a rum and coke with lime
>he won't drink a fucking Jack and Coke

And I thought I was pretentious for liking Wes Anderson movies.

Try some Tuaca, OP. It's tuscan italy's kind of version of southern comfort or drambuie, a vanilla, citrus brandy deliciousness.
Chilled in a shot, or with some ginger ale and a squeeze of lime, o whatever you like with your brandy. Could be some local cocktail I don't know about. Can always mix yourself with some Pelligrino bitter sodas.

hey if your gonna drink rum and cokes, i used to buy luxardo and mix it in, like a cherry coke. you could buy root beer schnaps and mix it with whisky.

alternatively, rum and more rum

Green tea gin? What? I've never heard of that.

I love green tea, and gin is a great kind of drink. Do you have any recommended gin? I usually get bombay; I know people say it isn't good, but I like it well enough.

I don't get the bombay hate, i think it's fine. My personal favourite is Tanqueray though. It's a little more expensive, but well worth it in my opinion.

Literally put green tea in gin to steep at room temperature for about two hours then strain. I've done it with bourbon and black tea many times to use in a honey sweetened whiskey sour and it's delicious.

My go to drinks are usually whiskey or gin. Lately I've been drinking a lot of gin-mojitos, whiskey sours (I make my own sour mix of course) and palomas.

>> No.5571253

>>5571245
I thought you meant to go buy a particular brand of green tea gin.

I could definitely make my own.

I feel like green tea gin shouldn't be drank just by itself though? I feel like it wouldn't taste to great on its own, maybe good but not great, probably best used in mixed drinks?

>> No.5571258

>>5571253
Green tea gin mojito, because nothing goes with green tea as well as mint. Maybe use honey instead of simple syrup.

I love mixing the vodka sour, really easy to do and tastes delicious.

>4cl vodka
>3cl rich syrup
>3cl fresh lemon juice
Shake with ice, strain into a cocktail glass. It's great. You can also strain over ice and fill upp with some soda water and sip with a straw

Other than that I love the white russian, moscow mule and mojito, but the mojito is such a hassle to make because of the mint leaves

Just plant some mint in your yard. Soon, you'll have an entire yard full of mint, because that shit is one hearty weed. It takes over everything.

Yeah we have some at home. Thing is I mostly do cocktails when I am with friends on trips and so on, so then you have to find mint plants from the local store. Good tip though, we have a metric ton in the garden by now

>>5571243
I think the Bombay Sapphire hate is just down to the fact that its got a pretty different flavour to most other common gins. It's also probably got something to do with the fact that most people who don't really give a shit think of it as like a top shelf gin.

It's the Beefeater recommendation that I can't get behind. Maybe it's just the one bottle I had but it was basically just paint stripper.

>> No.5572059

Ok, OP here. Today for aperitivo I had an Old Fashioned. Can someone please explain what's good about it? I don't see it at all. Tasted like diluted whiskey and was absolutely terrible. I should also tell you they hadn't mixed the drink particularly well, so that might have contributed. But still.. Worst drink so far.

>> No.5572098

>>5572059
I guess you can get good ones and bad ones. If the ice is already melting when it goes in the glass then thats going to dilute the whiskey, but if its not, then the drink shouldnt be diluted a great deal.

I love the cherry at the bottom once you finish the drink and its soaked up all whiskey, and think the orange flavour is really good.

Id suggest a Manhattan maybe, there is no ice left in the drink, but there is added vermouth which isnt as strong as whiskey so you might feel thats a bit diluted also. Even so, its a great drink
