It was healthier back then than it is now. The animals weren't as jacked up on steroids and antibiotics. The foods didn't use the same fillers and HFCS wasn't a thing in fast food at all. No GMOs. A simple time. There was still a fight for good health vs junk food, but the junk food was nothing like what it is today.

Beef fat and vegetable fat are both fat. The change had zero to do with the fat content of the fat the fries are deep fried in, it's still fucking fat.

The thing is that McD's wanted to be able to sell their fries to vegetarians and vegetarians were not going to buy potatoes that had been deep fried in beef fat. Switching to vegetable oil with artificial flavorings allowed them to sell their fries as vegetarian and avoid losing the 'stupid vegetarian who still wants to eat mcdonalds' market.

Both the Steak, Egg, & Cheese and the Bacon, Egg, & Cheese have been available at the various McDonald's locations I've patronized throughout Connecticut. Bagels and sandwiches made with them are pretty popular up here.

Incidentally, Serious Eats (of all places) recently publicized how you can have McD's swap in a circular, McMuffin-style egg for the folded egg on any of their breakfast sandwiches. Makes a big difference!

Can't speak for Canada, but in the US they never started fucking around with various "value" concepts till the early 90s, and the Value Menu we all know today didn't come along until 2001.

There wasn't much call for a "value menu/dollar menu" when almost everything on the menu was already under a buck anyway.

To keep the hot side hot and the cool side cool! (In other words, it was a dumb gimmick. Not that it didn't more or less work, but the resulting containers were unwieldy to say the least. And hell, once you put the two parts together to eat it the lettuce and tomato is going to reach meat temperature in seconds anyway, so all you were really getting out of it was slightly crispier lettuce.)

Im 33 and i used to get lots of fast food in the 80s.. I remember it like it was yesterday. Do the same products seem different now? Yes, but only if you pay close attention. Over time, every kind of technology advances. The food seemed simpler back then and tasted a bit less like salt/msg/sugar etc. Was it better? I dunno. The whole world seemed better when your a kid fuck if i know i wouldnt be allowed to say it anyways. The portion sizes are smaller and of course over the past 15 years with all the crap going on in politics and nutrition. None of that crap was around then. It was a less anal time.

Interestingly we had once considered raising "organic" chickens for our company and the only change that would've required was not vaccinating the birds. Literally nothing else, same exact living conditions but with more sickly birds. I thought it was cruel.
