The problem is that you can't make good shoestring fries from "fresh cut" potatoes.

You need to rinse and soak them for 30 minutes in icy water, let them drip dry for 5 minutes, THEN fry them.

Fresh potatoes have too much starch in them.

like s*** because they are s*** they use ignorance to sell products like its quality but its bullshit. they cut the potato and then deep fried that's not a french fries that's just fried potatoes and they turn soggy and have no flavor. they sell it to their customers that fresh is better when in reality they are just capitalizing on cheap labor and cheap potatoes. even their commercials market their burgers as juicy, but they're less than a half of a inch thick. good to see they are referring to is Greese. it's like Apple products people like cuz it's a popular thing to do

Yes, but unfortunately a lot of that science is directed at things important for a big restaurant chain, like bulk availability, a long shelf life (both in the warehouse and also when held warm under the heat lamps), and idiot-proof reheating procedures. Those are irrelevant to home cooks, so it's not difficult to do better at home.

That's especially true these days. McDonalds fries used to be cooked in beef tallow. Those were indeed fantastic, and not something the average person did at home. Alas they don't do that anymore. Thanks vegetarian assholes.

In the second half of the 20th century, McDonald's was king. No where else could you get such a consistent product for the entire family at an affordable price. The promotions and movie tie-ins were one-of-a-kind, and if you were a kid, nothing made you smile bigger than getting a Happy Meal with cookies and a toy inside.

McDonald's is a modern day marvel. To do business in so many markets, and to almost never run out of food. There are shortages from time to time, but it boggles the mind how they can process so many ingredients and deliver them to every corner of the world.

Hating McDonald's is a relatively new concept. You're just a bandwagoner without any original opinions or thoughts of your own. You're the equivalent of Anita Sarkeesian's followers. You didn't see any flaws until someone pointed it out to you, and then you got up in arms because you have nothing to care about or fight for.

Go kill yourself.

Incorrect. You can easily get a tasty meal for a whole family in your kitchen.

>>f you were a kid, nothing made you smile bigger than getting a Happy Meal with cookies and a toy inside.

Nope. I can clearly remember the first time I got a happy meal. I was super excited about it, opened it up, got ready to enjoy my (kid-size) hamburger. But it tasted like shit compared to what my dad used to cook on the decrepit charcoal grill out back. The happy meal was pure disappointment.

Now maybe if your family couldn't or didn't cook at home I can see it being a treat. But honestly you have to be pretty shitty in the kitchen for fast food to taste good by comparison.

Mine too.

The first time I had one was when my family moved to the US in November 1990.
We got into the airport really late US time but about lunchtime for where we just moved from, so little was open and we were hungry. Dad, who is half American, knew that McD would be open and reliable and none of us other than him had ever had it before so he thought he'd try to introduce it to us.

Don't recall what my parents, brothers and sister ate, but I had nuggets IIRC. I thought they tasted odd and I didn't like them much but the fries were decent. I don't remember any biscuits/cookies served with it, though, but remember asking my dad for a 'soondah-eh' (muh foreign-person pronunciation of 'sundae,' I saw it written under a picture of some ice cream with berries on it) and he told me that it was pronounced 'Sunday' and that they only sold it on that day. Honestly believed him for several years thereafter, the cheap sonuvabitch.

Anyway, over all, it was meh but I liked the toy (a moonheaded guy with sunglasses in a car) a bunch. Then I spent all that night being sick all over myself. To be fair, I think I caught something on the flight to the US from SG rather than the McD meal doing it. Didn't stop my brain from putting me off the stuff for the next 10 years, though, until my dad retired and we left the US and moved back home.

The problem with their fries is the process.

You can't just cut potatoes and fry them once like they do and expect anything other than a fucking greasy mess with bad texture. However, American's lap that shit up so they keep making them like that. It's also fastest way to make fresh fries and they only do high volume fast service so it works for them.

There is literally no decent fry recipe that involves only cutting frying and serving. The best way is a 2 step process where the potato is cooked through the first time but not crisp, then crisped at a higher temperature.

They still taste like they've been cooked in beef tallow. McDonald's scientists, when vegetarians started making a significant impact on the economy, couldn't just remove the flavor that made their fries famous so when they removed animal products as part of the process they engineered their fries to taste like beef tallow was still used. Everyone wins and we get to mock vegetarians for enjoying McDonald's fries.

In case anyone would like to know this, Sconecutter has some pretty awful and some pretty delicious fries.

They actually have two kinds of fries; regular and spicy. The first time I went to Sconecutter was with my dad about a year ago for lunch, and we each ordered a sandwich in a combo, and I ordered the regular fries, but he order the spicy fries, since he's always preferred spicier foods.

Big mistake on my part.

The regular fries are so bland and starchy that it's nearly impossible to choke them down. Apparently, the spicy fries aren't even that spicy, and are incredibly delicious. I've never ordered their regular fries since, and if we're including flavored fries in this "contest," then the spicy fries win, IMO.

The only downside is that most of their other foods are pretty overpriced...

I've never had McD fries done any way other than how they're done, that is, they're always the same and, thankfully, that 'same' is always at least 7/10. BK is always 5/10 or lower. Of the big three, it's McD > Wendy's > BK.

Arby's fries are a soggy, horrid mess, we agree. WC fries, however, are even worse. I've never had an order of fries from WC that wasn't as limp as Tom Cruise's dick on his wedding night.

The last time I was in TX for work was several years ago now, so I might not be remembering clearly, but I though Whataburger was pretty okay. Better than BK, anyway.
