I'm going to try being vegetarian.

The science is pretty murky about meat/animal proteins, vegan diets...what I want to know is, how many people here are vegetarian or vegan, and how has it worked out for you?

I don't give a shit about the morality, I just want to know if you feel healthier.

>> No.6122653

I ended up gaining weight when I went vegetarian. Carbs, carbs everywhere. My cholesterol went down about 30 points so that was probably the only upside to it.

This

go low carb instead, or at least become aware of carbohydrates in your diet, and maybe cut down on red meat as well. Moderation will grant you better health in the long run.

I've been on a plant-based diet for 4 months and I feel great, granted I felt great before as well. Just keep track of your nutrients and calorie intake, like with all diets. That's it, really.

I felt amazing when I went vegetarian, but even moreso when I went vegan. Definitely cutting out the cheese from my diet helped a lot. I generally eat a lot of fruits and vegetables.
And my boyfriend eats a ton of carbs and lost a lot of weight too. Like bread by the loaf and rice by big bowl. I don't know if it was the carbs that made >>6122653 heavier.

Most studies show that vegetarians have the same life expectancy and health as people who have normal healthy diets that include meat.
Meat isn't the problem. Huge portions and unhealthy food are.

Ironically, some studies show that vegans actually have a shoter life expectancy than meat eaters.

I'm a vegan and also a diabetic. Since I'm a diabetic, I have to have a blood test taken in order to check every nutritional aspect in my body every 3 months. These have been taken while i went from eating meat - to being a vegetarian - to being vegan.
Pretty much nothing changed during that time. At some point, my iron intake was a little low, so i ate more spinach, and by the next measurement it was fine again.

If you ask me, the body is designed to be omnivorous. It can sustain itself on a animal-free or animal-only diet, as long as you keep a diverse diet. Science is kinda backing me up on this statement.

>> No.6122990

Too much sugar in everything makes people fat, not animal fat. Our bodies can't process the amount of sugar that companies put into processed foods. Animal fat however it's decent at it. Not as great as full blown carnivorous animals like felines or canines, but better than sucking down all that sugar water or processed food all day.

I say, eat fresh foods as often as possible, cut out soda, eat meat in smaller portions, eat more fish than land animals, and exercise a little more often than not at all.

Becoming vegetarian purely for health reasons isn't a big deal, but when you apply some PETA agenda to it and call it veganism, you're getting close to bat shit crazy territory.

Most vegans I've met are very religious about their claims. They would rather use scare tactics and bogus claims than back their reason up with actual science. Which, as a previous poster stated, is murky at best right now. Which boils everything down to, we need more science.

My ex girlfriend was a vegetarian. She's mostly a completely sane, rational person, which for a woman is rare as you know I'm sure. She was one of my best friends for a few years.

But when it came to the vegan shit, she was a mess. She 'just wanted to be healthy'. You know how it goes. To be fair she made alot of delicious vegetarian food. Butternut squash? Forget about it that shit was awesome.

But eventually it started to take it's toll. We couldn't go to this restaurant because they didn't serve vegan food. We couldn't go to the bars because she could only drink wine because it was the only gluten free option.

Had to drop her ass.

It tastes fine, even if it looks unusual. I like to roast or somehow otherwise precook a load of vegetables and top the pizza with that, as well as extra sauce (and maybe pieces of tofu ricotta). People who have tried the pizzas I make this way have all complimented them.

Daiya is pretty good imo, but fairly expensive and obviously it's not intended to be a health food.

I feel pretty good and get the perk of being able to eat basically all the food I want without worrying about weight gain. I won't attribute feeling good to removing all animal products from the diet though, anyone who eats a decently healthy diet with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, etc is going to feel good. Getting regular exercise is also important.

The main health benefit of following a plant-based diet is that you may have less of a chance of developing many diseases, especially later in life. There's a better chance that you'll retain your health while the people around you start to develop cancers, heart problems, alzheimer's/dementia, etc.

Why can't both contribute to weight gain? Refined sugar increases the appetite and provides an easy source of calories with no real nutritional value, animal fat (and fat in general) is more than twice as calorie dense as carbs or protein and is most easily stored as body fat

Seems like a lot, but 137 grams of fiber translates to 548 calories, so it ends up being more like 2650 calories for the day. The dates and bananas I had that day were to get extra calories in for my exercise too.

>Carbs, carbs everywhere.
This is the biggest trap. If you're interested in going veg, I'd recommend getting used to veggie protein sources first Get in the habit of eating lots of beans, nuts, tofu, seeds, etc., and figure out ways to cook them that you will enjoy . I went vegetarian at 10 and was a bread-&-pasta tard up to about age 22-23. I was skinnyfat, weak, and sickly, and I constantly whined about wanting to eat meat. Then I learned to cook vegan food--huge improvement in appearance, health, and quality of life, and the idea of going back to eating meat seems crazy to me. And I think for most people that would have made for a for a much smoother transition, with much more likelihood of sticking to it.
