I've eaten three times at one-starred places.

Excellent every time. Definitely worth the hype.

Twice. The first time at Jean Georges back in Thanksgiving 2011, and the second time at Chateau de Pray in Spring 2013. In all honesty, the food in Chateau de Pray was more enjoyable than Jean Georges, though it should be noted I ate in there for a Thanksgiving dinner. However, the service for Jean Georges is by far the best I have ever encountered.

>In 1900 the tire manufacturers André Michelin and his brother Édouard published the first edition of a guide for French motorists. At the time there were fewer than 3,000 cars in France, and the Michelin guide was intended to boost the demand for cars, and thus for car tires. For the first edition of the Michelin Guide the brothers had nearly 35,000 copies printed. It was given away free of charge, and contained useful information for motorists, including maps, instructions for repairing and changing tires, and lists of car mechanics, hotels and petrol stations. In 1904 the brothers published a similar guide to Belgium.[2]

I'm sure it was a reasonable price for a ** restaurant, but when you can get comparable food for about half the price elsewhere the value is still questionable.

It was very good food, but it was more than double what we would usually pay, and you can get some damn good food for 30-40 pounds.

Spunds silly to make such a fuss over what a few pretentious food judges think. I watched a documentary about the whole rating system and there was little to no discussion of the taste of the food. Presentation and snobbery seemed to be the main deciding factor.

Only if they had a Michelin reviewer eat there. There are new restaurants opening all the time and the difference between a ** restaurant and a "normal" restaurant (In the £40+ price range ) isn't as big as you might think. Especially in London.

Of course it's possible for a new restaurant to not have a review yet, but the ones that are a) likely to get a rating and b) not known about already are very rare. There's little chance of just popping into an unknown restaurant run by an unknown chef who suddenly lands a rating in the next guide.

Although yes, the difference isn't that great in London. I've eaten at non-rated places that were £120 a head, in London. Because London.

What a stupid question. A documentary is not a primary source and you have no idea because it's a documentary, not a peer reviewed scientific paper. "I watched a documentary" is right down there with "Jenny McCarthy said". It's invalid as soon as you say it.

As to the question of documentary reliability, you've made yet ANOTHER stupid analogy and incorrectly implied that documentary films can't be equivalent in reliability to scientific papers (which also have notorious reliability issues).

Really, this is kind of pathetic. Sometimes asshole anons will just be like "Yeah I'm a dick, it's 4chan what do you expect" as if that changes anything, but you're actually defending your idiotic statements as if they had some merit.

I guess my issue with Michelin stars is very little of the United States is even covered. and the US isn't like the UK where you can cover London and get a third of the best restaurants. Our largest city New York is a shithole when it comes to food, the only thing its known for is Pizza.

I have been to Michelin stared restaurants in Europe and they were amazing, and I have been to restaurants in the US that were better(not saying US food is better) but the city they were in if they were even in a major city isn't covered by Michelin.

In the US its only New York, Chicago, and the San Francisco Bay area

I am not even saying they were wrong to choose those cities, but such a small percentage of the country lives in those areas it simply is in no way representative of the best US restaurants. that's obviously a hyperbolic statement, but the percentage of good to bad restaurants is much worse then in LA or SF. can't comment on London.

where New York really lags is in the blue collar food, despite the amount of working class pseudo tough guy pride new yorkers have, shitty diners on the west coast, in my experience , are generally better. Also although new york has almost any ethnic food you could imagine, quite a lot of it is really half assed.

I spent half a year in Taiwan and ate at Din Tai Fung several times (it's technically a chain). They mainly sell different kinds of dumplings. It's pretty tasty and kind of interesting to be able to see into the kitchen through a huge window.
Though you can't see that much most of the time since it's basically a steam factory in there.
I didn't know they had a star the first time I went there and it would not have made a big difference to me. Then again, I'm not an expert on Chinese dumplings.

I took my gf to Alinea in Chicago for our anniversary a few years ago. It was pretty nuts, they have really elaborate platings and it was all very beautiful to look at but honestly I was sometimes confused about how exactly to eat about 40% of the dishes. There was a lot of vertical stuff that didn't really lend itself to forks and knives, and the dessert was particularly confusing pic related. It all tasted very good but it wasn't a whole lot of food, mostly just interesting/colorful presentations. It definitely was overpriced (~$800 for the two of us)
