Beer thread is basically kill, so I'm starting a new one.

I was recommended this beer through a podcast and holy christ this is the best IPA I've ever had. It sadly blows my local brewery's IPA out of the water.

great man. a little pricey at $9.99 for a 4pk but honestly it blows most IPAs out of the water.

very smooth with a nice level of fruitiness and a bitter finish. not overly bitter or overly fruity. perfect balance.

Got a brewing kit for christmas and it came with ingredients to make American Pale Ale. What am I in for? I normally drink lagers like Lionshead when I'm broke and Yuengling when I'm not. What kind of beers can I go out and buy to have an idea of what my brew is gonna taste like if I didn't fuck it up?

>> No.6186290

I have only had Victory's Golden Monkey, which was pretty decent. One of my friends who is more familiar with them likes the brewery quite a bit. The general consensus seems to be they make a lot of decent to good beer. I am probably going to try their Storm King Stout before the Winter is over. I hear it is hoppy for a stout but I personally like hoppy beer and stouts so I may not even care.

To be completely honest:

1) Buy a book on homebrewing. Charlie Papazian has authored several excellent resources.
2) Get a good sized setup, preferably 5 gallons. Don't waste time on the smaller setups (like Mr. Beer).
3) Don't be afraid to deviate from the ingredients listed in recipes. You can still make excellent beer.
4) Use an online beer calculator. They're intuitive and informative, and some are even free.
5) Brew whatever you damn well please.
7) Be patient with your brew. Nothing can kill a brew like rushing it to completion.
6) Drink while you brew. It makes the whole process more enjoyable.

>> No.6191109

>>6191107

Oh, and:

9) Realize that you're going to have some bad batches of brew. Not everything will taste like an elixir of the gods. Recognize that those failures are essential to you perfecting your brewing skills. There's a legitimate reason brewing has been likened to art.

Time once was that canned beer could be suspect, but that isn't the case anymore. Can lining has progressed enough to keep any metallic taste from creeping into the beer. In general, the addition of various things are completely fine as long as said things aren't artificial and are quality ingredients, take a look at Dogfish Head, they use loads of odd ingredients but they are quality ingredients an they make quality beer. Also, in regards to added sugar, there are a lot of beers that use sugar, even Belgian Trappist ales, considered some of the best beer on the planet use sugar.

All of a sudden I can't drink beer anymore, guys. I drink like one, maybe two, and I get sick to my stomach. Completely full and nauseous. I'm not a lightweight or anything; I'm 5'11" 230lbs. It only happens with beer and lately only Miller 64's been in the house, so it's even a super light beer.

What's up with this?

Hitachino Nest is the only good Asian brewery, or at least the only good Asian brewery that is distributed internationally. Try some of their beer if you can, it is on par with American craft beer. I am sure there is some good beer that doesn't get exported as well, probably in Japan. I am not saying Japan is the best or being a weeaboo or anything, but out of all of East and Southeast Asia, of which the people are not great at drinking or brewing beer or distilling spirits, I think Japan is the best/most qualified.

I'm not impressed. Based on what I've read, this most current release is severely lacking in the vanilla flavor. I agree. It tastes a lot like FBS.

Not him, but have you visited Lagnuitas' new brewery in Chicago? It's pretty fuckin awesome. Definitley go if you havent, but get someone else to drive. They'll give you pretty much all you can drink for 45 minutes before they embark on the brewery tour.

Then the brewpub is super cheap. 64 oz growler fills are like $11 and single drafts are $3-5 depending on the brew.
