Decided to give this a try tonight. Holy SHIT the green tea is really evident. I was sorta expecting to be disappointed and find that the green tea wasn't really there too much, but this is more like alcoholic green tea with a bit of hops, instead of hops with a bit of green tea.

I don't particularly like the taste of most beers I've tried, but that's a given since I've mostly only drank pleb shit like coors and bud light.

However, I've been looking to try some better stuff.

What can you guys tell me about milk stouts and oatmeal stouts? I don't really love the taste of Guinness, but I like it far more than most beers. Would this be a good type of beer to try?

Hey guys, Canadian drinking pleg here. I'm only 18, I'll be 19 and legally able to drink in about 2 and a half months. So obviously, I haven't drunk too much yet but I just have a question.
What's wrong with Budweiser? I mean, I see all the cool looking beers you guys post like IPA and it all looks delicious as fuck but I like the taste of Budweiser too. It's most definitely not the best beer out there but I just see so many of you guys bashing it all the time and I'm just curious as to why. Maybe after I try better shit I'll understand, idk.

If someone could explain it to me I'd be pretty grateful. Is there anyone else out there that does like Budweiser along with me? Or am I alone on this

pretty common with limited release beers as it would piss off their customers if the first guy who comes in buys their entire allotment. I've seen places with stuff like KBS where they only allow a couple 12oz bottles because the entire store only was allotted 2 cases

Its definitely a good policy, it allows people not not have to get there instantly to get rare beers and they are guaranteed to sell them out regardless so they aren't losing any sales

If they would do the damn four packs like every other brewery does I'd buy their beer more often. Expedition is one of my favorite stouts but I'm not dropping $17 at a time on beer. It's more of a mental thing but I don't care. Them and Ballast Point do this and it results in multiple $15-20 six packs that take forever to sell. I did hear that Bell's Black Note comes in four packs so at least that won't break the bank if I can manage to get a hold of it.

I did pick up Victory at Sea last night though. Damn good stout even if it is fifteen bucks for a six pack. It'll last me a few nights.

the thing is, most mainstream american beers taste the way they do because:

1. the american beer industry really became industrialized after the lifting of prohibition. americans gained a taste for shitty watered down bathtub beer, so that's what sold when it became legal again.

2. compared to a lot of the historical european beer drinking areas, the united states gets HOT for long stretches of the year. no, not everyone lives in the fucking desert, but look at a map - england, germany, belgium, etc, are all pretty far north latitude wise. and when it's really hot outside, sometimes a thick heavy porter just doesn't sound appealing, thus the preference for a lighter style of beer.

budweiser is specifically made with rice in the mash - and they don't hide this, it's on the can - so most people will consider that watering it down.

now, i'm not the biggest fan of bud heavy, but when it's time to sit around a summer campfire, a suitcase of busch light is a good riding buddy. you'll most likely find other beers that you like better, but if you really like budweiser now, there will always be certain situations where it will still be your drink of choice.

usually i go to the grocery store once a week and trade off between either a 12 pack of something cheap like miller lite/PBR or 2 six packs of some craft stuff (loving the Stone IPA variety pack, just wish it have regular stone in there too). Sometimes I want something strong and flavorful like a nice IPA, but honestly a lot of times when i come home from work and I'm dirt tired and thirsty, an ice cold domestic beer like budweiser REALLLY hits the spot in a way that a stout or IPA just doesn't.

I kind of think beer snobs who wont touch the stuff aren't the norm, most people probably drink both "domestic" and "craft" stuff to some degree.

You need less malt, but that's about it. The other steps are essentially the same. Depending on the country you might also pay less tax.

generally the amount of hops is proportionally less because high hops/very low malt beers don't taste particularly good, but yeah malt is the primary thing at play here

If you are cutting your malt bill by 50%, that is a huge savings, sure the shipping costs aren't reduced but you are downplaying how huge of a factor in the cost to the brewery the amount of malt is.

Why do you think very few breweries can manage to sell imperial stouts at the same price as their typical beers?

There's ultra-cheap macro beer, and then there's modestly-priced micro ("craft") beer, and then there's expensive macro and micro beers. Something like that.

I wish I could buy a 30 pack of decent ale for the price of Natural Ice (about $17 after tax).

I got into homebrewing because I wanted cheap micro beer, and while I can spend a fraction of what it costs to buy at the supermarket, it's not Natural Ice cheap yet. And this hobby keeps getting more expensive, because I enjoy buying new equipment.

Beer should be good, cheap, and plentiful. I wish I lived in the Shire. I bet they bathed in ales.

Lets just say hypothetically that there is no quality benefit of using an opaque better sealed can. Its still a much better option for brewers and your opposition makes no sense

you are getting off track. How does any of that stuff make bottles as good as cans?

Proves there is 0 issue with QC and seal. QC comes down to company and standards, but crown seals are every single bit as effective as cans.

do you not realize that cheaper for brewers means cheaper for consumers which means better?

Why would it being less burdensome possibly be bad?

This type of thinking is what led to Light beers and watering down IPAs to increase returns.

even if it did prove that, it does nothing to show bottles are better. It at best suggests they are the same
(not to mention you are ignoring that no light is obviously better than a little light)

dude, IPAs are getting stronger and stronger, DIPAs are more common than ever

Don't confuse the rebranding of pale ales as session IPAs with watering down IPAs, that just makes you sound dumb. Stop being a luddite

Cans can yield to puncturing and mechanical stress, they are far from impervious. Glass needs a lot of mechanical stress to break but doesn't tear or crumble. Glass will have thermal stress if it undergoes extreme changes in temp. Both are susceptible to pressurization (freezer explosions). Bottles aren't better than cans, but to say cans are better than bottles is foolish. Cans are cheaper yes, but value itself is not an intrinsic indicator of quality.

bottles are easier to ship (both having a superior profile and being lighter), protect the product better, and are cheaper

Bottles break more easily (cans are more susceptible to puncture but packages are far more likely to be subjected to shock than puncture so cans fare far better) and glass is more hazardous when it breaks

If quality is indeed the same as you blindly cling to, then why would you ever not go with the cheaper option? Your whole premise seems to be paying more money is good because some things that are cheap are bad like bud light.

So what? It's about how good they taste, not how many extra pennies the brewer is making off you.
