I eat the same basic things almost every day with very little variation. I used to season it, add multiple ingredients, try new things, etc. But now I just don't bother. I cook all my own food, but I can't relate with cooking or food presentation as a thing.

I came to /ck/ expecting to find new recipes but find myself only arguing about people and biochemistry.

Adrenaline and projecting force feels good in what is people otherwise likely quite restrained lives.

We're still primal vicious animals at our core. The facade of civility is gone with anonymity and a lack of physical presence, many people see the opportunity to behave like the complete narrow minded shitheads they actually are all along. Having it be a topic about something they don't like, or that has people saying opinions they don't like, is just a very viable proxy. If you go looking for arguments you'll tend to find one because you're apt to make one.

I cook near everything from scratch, no lie. I use the occasional shortcut here or there from time to time, such as stock powder or something, but I've never purchased a jarred or tinned sauce of any variety ever in my life. The flavour just doesn't compare. Yes, they're sometimes cheaper than homemade sauces, but why pay $2.49 for a pint of 4/10 tomato sauce when you can make 9/10 for $3?

>but i don't have the time
Time poverty is a huge problem for a lot of people, but as I tell people I work with: if you have time to trawl Facebook or whatever other time-sapping activity you engage in for an hour or two daily, you have more than enough time to cook from scratch.

One of my friends complains about not having enough time to cook after she just spent an hour complaining to me about not having enough time to cook. Learn to multitask.

Unlike the two of you, though, I don't harsh on someone for choosing jarred sauces. I've yet to try one myself that I like, but to be completely honest, if I found one that came close to homemade, I'd likely never make another sauce for as long as I live. It's a 'make the bread, buy the butter' sort of thing: storebought butter is so cheap compared to homemade that even the slight increase in quality homemade butter has over storebought, it's not worth the effort.

>The facade of civility is gone
I don't think this is necessarily true, it seems like being hyper-confrontational is actually encouraged in our country. If someone disagrees with you it's an opportunity to get your ego out and just letting it be is unacceptable and weak. It pretty much undermines all constructive talk.

I'm American as well, you assumed right.

Yeah, I'd agree that it is a strangely dualistic thing, a mashed together mess of disjointed nonsense really. On one hand it's shameful to back down and engage in any kind of meaningful or intelligent exchange, and on the other it's expected that people act pseudo-rational. Which more or less amounts to obedience to hierarchical control structure and whatever the specific location places value in. These two ways of functioning don't really come together very well... It all really depends on the demands on one's environment, unfortunately people seem inclined, or are taught from a very young age, to throw themselves out and immediately place heir faith in authority. Or perceivedly authoritatively defined truths and ideas. People have no trust in themselves and seem to place little value in their own questions, ideas, or desires. Except for when those things come out in all the most udnerhanded, petty, and despicable ways.

There's a lot to be said. Despite being calmer than when I made my initial post I'm pretty trashed in general and far from coherent and clear minded. I do think that people love the feeling of detached conflict and a shot of adrenaline though. They're functionally anonymous, have no persistent sense of identity in their social ecology. They can't mouth off and rely on the law to protect them, but then again it doesn't matter. So regardless of what kind of person they are, they act like an asshole in a way that's more than just bluntly. Some part of them desires conflict.

I'm the same in a lot of ways, personally. But I feel like it stems from a bit of a different basis. I reconcile it within myself with the knowledge that in person, I actually would desire them to drag it to a physical level. Arguing on an intellectual level is worthless, I desire a different sort of conflict and resolution.
